I would contact the Vet. It is soooo important for her to get her nutrition, she will get low on milk and the puppies will suffer as well!! Maybe she has a bug and does not feel well! Write down every thing you want to tell the Vet. before you make the phone call, so you won't leave anything out!! Good Luck to you and Congratulations on your new pups!!!

No this is not normal. Teh mother should have started eatign the day she gave birth or the latest teh following day
Do you have the food and water right next to where the pups are??
Seh could be having some serious problems and with her not eating the pups will not be gettign the proper nutrition either. YOu would be best suppliment feeding them Use goats milk or puppy formula.
this si something you need an emergancy vet if you vet is closed. Please don't let another day go by you may loose all mom and pups.

I find it difficult to believe that anyone would allow a dog that is 18 years old to give birth to puppies. Its amazing that she did not die as the pelvic of a dog fuses long before 18 years of age and makes giving birth extremely dangerous. Take her to the vet for an examination, he may be able to prescribe a course of food and treatment that will enable her to regain some of her strength and weight. If the pups were born 5 weeks ago she is no doubt still nursing and this is taking all of her nutrients so she has no hope of gaining weight.

When I USED to breed my Chihuahuas, the mothers always had very healthy appetites after giving birth! It's not normal for her not to want to eat. She needs the nutrition, in order to pass it on to her puppies and stay healthy herself. If she's not eating, something is wrong, and she needs to see a vet immediately, and also take the puppies and have them checked out! Don't put off taking her and the puppies! The sooner you get her and her babies to a vet, the better off her and her puppies will be!

a dog that has just given birth should NOT be on regular food.. they should be on qualtiy PUPPY food... (all durring pregnancy and until the pups are weaned infact)
is she drinking?? ( I would assume so or she would dead)
will she eat canned food??
sounds like you need to call a vet.. all her nutrition (none if she isnt eating) is going to milk production for the pups.. she will eventaully be too weak to care for herself... and she will probably die if you dont get medical care for her ASAP

Refusing to eat is a sign that the food isn't up to par.
Perhaps her regular food isn't providing her with the nutrients she needs. What IS she eating? and what Is her regular food?
It could be time to switch her food. Try a brand that contains ingredients that are at least fit enough for humans. Like Innova Holistic, Evo, Eagle Pack and such.

She should have already eaten, but you cannot expect her to get up and go to her dish by herself, and you need to bring her the food dish and possibly hold the food in your hand and feed it to her. If this does not work, try and give her the soft food of your brand. This is all that one of our dogs will eat when she has pups.
