Even if it might prevent aids - which I seriously doubt it would - what a horribly, cruel society to practice such an abominable condemnation. Thumbs down 10 fold.

But thanks for posting that piece. Certainly diminishes my admiration for the Hindu culture.

This is an add on: it just occurred to me, why hasn't the critics of China's human rights abuses, never scored in on this practice?

Where is the ACLU or Amnesty International, why don't we hear them clamoring to have this practice outlawed? And how about our Presidents? Never hear Bush, Clinton or any of the others ranting and raving about it. Shame on them.

Everyone is human and has a choice when coming face to face with situations. Not many can withstand their beliefs, religious or morals. Some can in one way, but not the other. Peer pressure has a lot to do with most of it.

One way is to stay out of situations that might make you tempted. It doesn't matter what religion you are, people make mistakes. Aides can be prevented by practicing abstinence and continuing to check blood products of donors.

It is sad that other cannot respect people for who they are in life. I say treat others as you want to be treated.

I have studied that. Even everybody knows that but everyone remains silent in the name of God. Can we call this, fear of God. Certainly not. It can never be justified. Offcourse some positive points have been seen after independence (like banning of Devdasi custom in Puri Jaggannath Temple, etc ) But if now also these things are happening then it should be prevented.

It happens all over the World (not only Hindu) and still we say we are living in 21st century. Pathetic.

No.

Condoms and safe sexual practices can prevent AIDS.

I don't know how the catholic church can look itself in the face knowing it's intransigent and outdated dogmas are responsible for countless prolonged and uncesessary deaths and the accelerated spread of an incurable condition. Not to mention the unchecked spread of numerous other STD's.

Aids could be prevented if people refrained from unsafe sexual practises. In African countries where AIDS originated men consider it 'macho' to have sex without wearing a condom. It's the children born HIV+ I feel sorry for.

How would this prevent AIDS? Prostitutes (whether paid in a brothel or unpaid in a temple) are effective vectors for all kinds of STI's.

Aids has nothing to do with religion! It has to do with unprotected sex!!! You can be sleeping with everybody without paying the consquences!!! Trouble is the people paying for it are the ones that are having sex for the first time with a player!!!! always protect yourself and others!!! Practice safe sex!!!! It's best for all!!!

HIV/AIDS cuts across all lines including religion. No group is immune to the disease.

What is needed is education....and using condoms when having sex.

AIDS is a disease, not a shortcoming in religeous training.

Aids could be prevented if all people only practised sex with their own pre tested partners.

With reference to your link, all countries and cultures have brothels.

Tha Kama Sutra never mentions anything about condoms. so ................ no.

And um.."203" ..if you read this .. reread the article..it does not say the catholic church approves it at all! The nun interviewed is horrified by it and ministers to the poor girls trapped by the sexual slavery forced on them.
