Well it's not generally recommended as a long term thing, but as a one off if you're in agony you could consider crunching an aspirin on the painful tooth, that helps with the pain for a while.

Other things you could consider are:
- make a thick paste out of bicarbonate of soda and a little water and apply it to the tooth - tastes disgusting, but it's supposed to neutralise the acid caused by the tooth decay and help to reduce the pain.
- wet a tea bag and bite down on it with the affected tooth, the tannin in the tea is supposed to kill the pain.

That's all I can come up with other than medications, except to say that for short periods of time (ie. up to a week) you can take up to 800mg ibuprofen (4 nurofen tablets) three times a day safely, but you should take them with food.

A dab of 'oil of clove' on the finger and wipe over the gum around the offending tooth. You may need to repeat this at fairly frequent intervals until such time as an appointment is arranged with a professional dentist.

As previous answerers have said, oil of cloves is very good.

You could also try taking a sip of whisky, and holding it as long as you can bear over the affected tooth until you have to either spit it out or swallow it. Also, hold a wrapped hot water bottle against your face where the pain is.

I do feel tremendously sorry for you, as toothache is probably the most miserable pain you can suffer from.

Oil of cloves is the best remedy until you get to the dentist, and most Orajel products don't work long enough

you can get a product called Red Cross Toothache Relief at any druggist (it contains clove oil) for about $ 5.00

Oil of cloves is the only thing that really works all be it temporarily, it don't smell to clever either but it will numb the pain. I know you said you have nothing at hand but if you can get to an all night chemist some way..

Unfortunately, there is nothing that can really be done for a severe toothache! That is the worst pain in the world, I have been there, and I feel for you! You can try Orajel, but I have found that all it does is numb the rest of your mouth.

Have you got any whiskey in the house. If so rub a bit on the affected area. Sounds like an abscess. Also get a nice cosy scarf and warm it up and put than on your face,

It won't help right now but there are products for babies that are teething that you can rub on gums to relieve pain, (one is Numzit). If you can take aspirin, hold one between the teeth on the one that is painful and allow it to dissolve, that may help.
