I assume it is primarily the abortion issue. On most other issues the dems are closer to Jesus' teachings. Feed the poor, clothe the naked, house the homeless, etc. I agree the idea of a "welfare nation" has problems, but in reading the bible, there are many instances of Jesus preaching sharing, and giving. I am aware of the "teach a man to fish" approach, but if you are honest with yourself, you would agree that Jesus had a attitude of sharing, as opposed to 'every man for himself'.Like many questions, this is hypothetical, I realize Jesus was not political, which is the common dodge to this question.

bryan- would you eliminate all programs the state and fed has to help the poor? It is pennies compared to military spending. doesn't seem right....

Jesus' teaching to feed the poor,... is to us individually. He would never teach that it's right to force others to help the poor.
Forcing people to help the poor (e.g., through taxation) actually damages character instead of building it. The receiver feels entitled to the help, not thankful and the giver resents being forced and thereby doesn't get the benefit of giving from their heart.

Yet Jesus was aware of politics in society. I agree with you about the dodging.
I don't generally vote Republican, though I have voted for some Republican candidates in the past. Never in a presidential race for some reason, though. You're right about Jesus' principles, and since we don't live by them as a nation, we fail to flourish as we could. In general, Americans bash socialistic approaches because that is what they have been taught. Here, people fear the government, whereas in other free countries, it's the opposite b/c the people have so much power. Here, the government is built around secrecy, lies and media-brainwashing. Just take the docu-movie "Sicko" for example. Did you see the look on those foreigners' faces when Michael Moore was telling them about the cost of hospital stays? That should say it all.
Unfortunately, I have known some people to vote one way simply because a candidate said they were anti-abortion, and these voters seemed to say, "All I needed to hear! Where do I cast my vote for so-and-so?" It's ignorance, but some people live for it.

I think it goes deeper than abortion....there is the gay marriage issue, church and state issues, and other socially conservative issues. But much of what you say is true. I think Jesus would probably be an independent in today's political climate. Because neither of the major parties completely espouses Biblical truth....and, at the same time, both possess some aspect of Biblical truth.
(I also disagree with the claim of some that Jesus would be uninterested in politics...I think He would be very interested in politics, though perhaps would engage in them in a very different way. For how can apathy to the functioning of society ever be a characteristic of any godly person?)

Many Republicans believe in sharing and giving and do so out of their own pockets. The abortion issue is the main reason I think; that and a belief that homosexual marriages are not in keeping with Christianity either.

Jesus was not Robin Hood. He said we should take care of the poor and needy, but he never said we should be FORCED to do so. Democrats are closer to the teachings of Muhammad than Jesus, as Jesus never tried to convert through force.

Because the Republican party has successfully positioned itself in the minds of the ignorant as the party of Christianity.

No true Christians involve themselves in politics. As Jesus said at John 17:16: "They are no part of the world just as I am no part of the world."

I think that it is obvious that they do what their pastor tells them to do.
Christians have a difficult time with logical thought.
