Especially how it came to be destroyed ( I assume king Solomon built it) and what happened to the religious treasures in it?

Why did the Jews not rebuilt it and

Why Israel is not claiming back the stone tablets with the 10 commandments, fom Ethiopia?

And as I am a non believer, why did God let the Israelites down so badly on that occasion? He is not a reliable ally, is He!

The Babylonians destroyed "Solomons" temple when the "Jews" went into Babylonian captivity. It was rebuilt after that 70 year captivity, then was upgraded by Herod on a great scale, to the extent that it was called "Herod's" temple in the time of Messiah. That temple was destroyed by Titus in 70 A.D. YHVH is reliable. The Israelites failed to stay on His side. When they abandoned true worship, they found out the hard way that the true Almighty would not protect them. There is some question whether the tablets in Ethiopia are genuine. Jewish tradition believes that Jeremiah and some Friends hid the ark in a cave near Jerusalem.

Here's a really thorough article in Wiki on the two temples that have been built so far. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_in_Jerusalem

The original site of the temple, as the article says, is now occupied by the Muslim shrine the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa mosque.
