My crazy Uncle Fred would be hurt if he found out he isn't really Teddy Roosevelt, does that make the rest of the family hurtful and mean for not believing him?

I'm sure you can see the parallel...

just tell your mom that you do not beleive, that you are an individual and that you have the right to choose your own religion.

Quote them the verse in Mark that says (paraphrased) - if they do not believe, then shake the dust from your shoes and move on to someone else who is open to the message.

Tell her that she cannot keep harrassing you about your decision, or you will call the police on a harrassement charge.

And lastly tell her thats your free will - christians are VERY big on free will. Free will means to make your own decision - which you have done - and if she wants to make you change your decison, then its NOT free will anymore.

Oh and you must decline any and all invitations to go see the pastor/priest/rabbi or whatever. You are quite capable of making your own decisions, and you would rather that they NOT use their "free will" to harrass you into changing your free will just to follow their "free will". Thats called brainwashing.

Beleive me, I HAVE been through it all.

As a Christian I can say that I dont think atheism is wrong. I actually think its a lot more logical than Christianity or any spiritual lifestyle. It is a lot easier for people to believe in what is tangible and what they can see than to believe in supernatural happenings that they have no proof of ever happening in the past or in their own life time. If you decide to tell you mom you dont believe remind her that Jesus says no one can come unto Him unless drawn by the Father. If shes going to be "upset" with anyone it should be directed towards her God not you.

No, I suppose some atheist parent would be hurt to find out that their kid believes.

Your mom hurts because she believes that atheism is not good for you. Guess she loves you.

I believe atheism is wrong, but for other reasons.

No, it doesn't make atheism hurtful, it makes your mom caring. Many of those that believe, honestly think that their way is correct and thus are concerned for others around them. This is true for atheists as well, we care about those around us.

I don't quite understand your question. But I'm pleased to hear that your Mom believes in our loving God. Perhaps you should sit down and talk with her and let her explain what you don't understand about our Creator God. It sounds like you have a smart Mom! I'd listen to her if I were you. Atheism is wrong. No matter what others say, there is a God and them just saying there isn't one, doesn't make any difference. What's hurtful is, looking Jesus in the face and telling Him you don't believe in Him. He gave his life for you. What has atheism done for you? Who has loved you like Jesus? Who will stand with you when you don't want to be alone? Who will love you when no one else will? I think you better sit down with your smart Mom and listen to some wisdom.

It doesn't make it wrong at all - it is your right to be what you want.
My mother says I do not believe in God with no problem but for some reason cannot say I am an atheist!

You have to explain to your mom, that no one can "impose" or "convince" someone to believe in something, that they can not relate to. I am a catholic who married an atheist and our two children, are being raised "catholic" by me. My hubby and I , do not ever discuss religion, he listens carefully to my kids, without making any "negative or positive" remarks and guess what ?? Before conceiving our kids, this was the only time I discussed this subject with him, and I told him:" Either this way, or no way and now, will we have children together?"
He agreed, he loved and loves me because, LOVE MOVES MOUNTAINS !! RESPECT, helps endure the most difficult arguments !!!!

I think you are very considerate to be worried about your mother. You are a good son. She has GOT to be proud of you.

You do what you think is best.

Atheism is not wrong if that is what you feel is your path. I wish you all the best.
