In that faith system the pig was part of the set of the animals that were considered as "unclean". When a person has a demond, they had an "unclean spirit" So Jesus sent the unclean into the unclean.
The question about animal rights is funny (not sure if it is a joke or not) but it does make me muse.
Yes, animals do have rights, see such passages as "you shall not muzzel the ox as it mills the grain" but the idea is that GOD issues the rights, so the argument would be that this act of Jesus would be alright.

According to the legend he was a Jew, and they didn't use pigs for food anyway, so apparently he saw no problem with it. I doubt if the pigs felt the same way.
I wonder what demon-possessed bacon would taste like?

infrequently any Shepard had pigs as cattle, because of the pig being seen as an unclean animal. it is greater in all probability that those pigs have been wild pigs;Wild pigs and oxen are animals that return and forth in a herd or p.c..,which might clarify that.

Well, He took the demons, who had requested that they be let go into the herd, side. Maybe we haven't heard the pig's side. Oh wait, we can't they don't talk. Was that sarcastic?

Was he against animal rights? Actually without Jesus there would be no animals.

Evidently animals have no souls or spirits (this actually is true as they do not exist), however I'd think that this would make them immune to possession.
