If this is new damage, and it wasn't done by you, then you may have answered your own question. If it's old damage, then either someone did circumvent the lock, or attempted to, or the person who installed the lock doesn't know how to use tools.

Sure does sound like someone tried to break in. The lock is the obvious place to try and force entry, which would explain why they tried around the handle. Marks into the frame suggests use of a leverage tool, such as a crowbar or 'jemmy' to me. Report it to the police.

could be in the past someone has done some construction work on the door frame or door jam is all. Those scratches may just be where the stain isn't as dark?? Also do you use your keys when opening the door, with a key chain? That could scratch the door?

without seen actual locations and depth of scratches?
if someone was trying to break in you would have a marking that is very deep like crow bar or tool set flat head screw driver.
