The atheists I have met believe in HUMANITY. Yes, they may be discouraged by the millions being killed in the name of one or another ancient, discredited fairy tale, but they want to believe they are part of the continuation of an epic species. Believers to me greedy. Humanity isn't enough for them, that want to LIVE FOREVER and they'll stop at nothing (including shortening the only life I know for sure) to get it.

Not only do I find it odd, but I also find it ridiculous. Just because I don't believe in a diety doesn't mean I don't believe in higher ideals, like humanity or love. What confuses them is that we don't happen to worship our ideals nor do we become slaves of our goals.

Wanting to live forever is very selfish in my opinion. They accuse atheists of being selfish and self-centered, of placing ourselves higher than their imaginery being, and yet they don't see how ironic their own selfishness is. They place themselves so high that they desperately want to live for eternity, never to seize to exist, to always be there one way or another, to occupy space and time. The selfishness itself being considered a sin among almost all religons also adds special flavour to the irony.

I know that my actions matter and that I can make the change. Nobody expects me to bring the World Peace, but by being the change I want to see in others, I'm offering my 2 cents.

Great question! :)

It says so in the Bible, when nothing existed God brought every thing into existence. If you want proof you have to read the rest. I like that story of our origin, where God said he breathed life into the body he formed from the earth and gave it life from his breath, and that all life is in the blood, now scientifically speaking we should find that life share's common Dna it does but not only that Blood has 25 trillion cells that are red and these have NO Dna! why because it comes from the breathe of God not the earth like every thing else. Then you have the mathematical certainties that say the huge complexity of life and the universe could never come about by random chance, this is the reason Anthony Flew the great Atheist changed his mind and believes in God because that is where the evidence lead him. Hardly a whimsical cop-out, more an Intelligent observation applied from study.

Why do I HAVE TO believe in anything bigger than myself?

My job in life is to get through it the best way I can.
I CHOOSE to do the 'right thing' cos I'm too lazy to put up with the grief if I don't.
I'm nice to and help a few people along the way and most people like me enough to smile back at me when I smile.

I don't feel any need to 'believe in' an Invisible Sky Critter thing and I sure don't want to live forever and if I did I wouldn't want to be a totalitarian dictator's plaything like xians are quite willing to be.

I find some of them hypocritical, they cant accept our beliefs, but push us to see there's. Wheres the proof? I am a science person and believe in facts, not stories from over millennium would have been exaggerated through 'Chinese whispers'. I have religious friends, that respect me enough to let me have my opinion, and I respect them and their traditions. I dont break the law, hurt anyone and I look after my fellow man. I find it funny how many religious are locked up.
Also is it true that some churches require 1/3 of your pay check? Does this go to needy children in third world countries or research in cancer and HIV?

While I agree that H. sapiens is capable of something farkin' amazing one of these days, I hesitate to make the claim that "I believe in humanity," partly because I don't know exactly what that means and partly because -- well, you've seen what the theists have done with that much-abused word "believe." I don't want any part of that.

The humility of believers never ceases to amaze me -- not only do they want to live forever, they actually think they deserve it.

INdeed it is odd. In view of the fact that those who call themselves christians are judgemental, hypocritical, narrow minded, hateful and along with other organized believers in god, have caused more suffering, murder, destruction, extortion and have drained the wealth of the poverty stricken to build monuments to the perpetuation of the positions of wealth, power and influence of the "Clergy". Aethiests, in the whiles, have gone through life minding their own business, being houded by these perpetrators of blasphemy and superstition and having their lives interfered with or dominated by laws enacted by the "religious" to force these ridiculous fairy tales onto the general public and, of course, interfering with the ability of other religions to practice, without interferance, their brand of thinking.

I don't find it the least bit odd. Some of them just like to try to pigeon hole us and just in general put labels on us to make them feel better. Others understand the only difference between us is essentially that we believe in one less god than they do and that we are individuals, not clones.

I find that when you listen to unfavorable opinions about what other people think about you?, it is a good way to become depressed!

But, I don't care what others think about me, personally! As long as I can look into MY eyes, in the mirror, and be satisfied with what I see, then I am fine, and those belittling opinions don't matter at all !!

And by the same token, I don NOT judge others, by what they believe! It is their choice, not mine! Nor do I look down on them for being WHO they are!
That includes, Atheists, AND Christians, alike!!

I have to agree man.
I consider myself as a smaller part in a larger community. If I cannot make my life and the life of those around me a little bit better, then I've failed as a person.
Unfortunately, there are no do-over's. We get ONE shot at this life and that's it.
Those that waste it on imaginary sky-pixies, are the ones who truely have forgotten the point of life.

I guess you could call it "belief in humanity", not quite sure that I'd use that terminology.

I do find their attitude that I *must* believe in something to be distributing.
