i do this all the time...

Depending on your situation of course:

Did you grow up around here?
Where did you go to school/collage?
Do you live close to your folks?
I love to ride motercycle(or what ever you like) how about you?
That new Thi restaraunt is great! Have you tried it yet?

It's sounds simple and for the most part is is. The key is to LISTEN twice as much as you speak(though I'm a serious jabber jaw) and the conversation will flow.
Hope it helps.

Questions about their family are good because they know the answers and that puts people at ease. How many brothers and sisters. What do they do. What grandparent are they closest to. You can go on and on. House, family, street, neighborhood, favorite teacher. Pets. It tells them that you are friendly.
Just avoid judgment and change the subject if they become judgmental.

Always engage people in their favorite subject---THEMSELVES. Ask about job, where they live, family, siblings, high school, where they grew up. what they were like as a child, sports, hobbies. and let it flow and act interested, even if you're not.

Ask the person about their favorite things....tv show, movie, food, color, ask about their family their friends, interests etc....people in general love to talk about themselves...and remember to make eyecontact...be attentive...good luck!

People love to talk about themselves. Just ask something that has to do with them.

do you have any siblings?
what do you like to do in your free time?

make sure to share your interests too, of course.

"How are you?"
"What did you do with your day?"
"Do you do any sports?"
"What's your favorite Sport's team?"
"You'll never believe what happened today. (Tell a funny story)"
