I was under the impression that Crypto-Catholics were those who practice Catholicism in secret in places where there is not freedom of religion like Communist China.

Using this definition:
+ What is a post-Crypto-Catholic?
+ Why would they be superstitious?

I just listened to a book on CD that talked about the placebo effect and the nocebo effect. The nocebo effect is basically the reason why bad things happen when people are expecting bad things to happen. It's why superstitions work. The example in the book was the number 4 in Japan and China. The word for the number 4 in Japanese also means death, and this has brought about a higher mortality rate on the 4th of every month. People's minds set it up that way and people who are sick often die on the 4th.

So, these "Crypto Catholics" will cause their own fears somehow. Superstitions will all fade away some day. Maybe even the idea of hell will too.

Recovering Catholic here.

I have given up my belief in Judgmental punishing Gods, hell and a lot of other things. Now I just follow the teachings of Jesus. It's a whole lot easier that dragging all of that guilt around.
