Well our friend gave us this wonderful little pup that was only 1 week old so we bottle fed him for 5 more weeks by then we love the little booger! Anyways a cop came to our house and said the dog was stolen and they took him away! Later we found out the cop kept him for himself and never returned it to his REAL owner! Is that legal?

Of course not. Do you know he was a real police officer? Call the police anyway!

First of all, I'd want to know IF the dog is really stolen...

Second, why haven't you filed a complain with his department? He takes a dog that is supposedly stolen and then doesn't charge you with possession of stolen property??? Sounds hinky to me...

I would file a complaint, contact the local newspaper and certainly make a stink...as long as you're totally legit, then there should be nothing to worry about. However, IF the dog is in fact stolen and you knew that, then you have some responsiblity in the matter. Certainly the cop shouldn't have benefited from the crime he came upon, but you might just thank your blessings that you didn't get charged if he did do this...

It would not be legal for a police officer to have taken away your property without some sort of court order to do so, however, it may have been a humane officer that was coming to get the puppy because it was taken from it's mother so soon (whatever the circumstances), the puppy should have been under vet care when it was so little and was not being directly cared for by it's mother.

Perhaps this was an Animal Control Officer who was acting in what he thought was the pups best interest? Maybe he didn't give it back to the owners right away because it needs additional care? Maybe if you can contact the owners, you can buy the puppy from them.

It doesn't sound legal to me...I mean okay the cop claimed it was stolen from someone else but he took it from you and kept it for himself...so he stole it a second time. I would talk to someone in his department and try to find out who the original owners were and they can press charges against him.

Of course it's not legal. Go to the local police headquarters and report what happened. At the very least, if the dog actually as stolen, it will be returned to its rightful owner; if it was not, it will be returned to you.

No, it's not legal. Report this cop and get your puppy back!

How did you find out he didn't return the puppy? Was it possible that he did, but the owner gave it to the cop?

I do recommend you report him and try to get your puppy back.

Did your friend take the pet to the vet and get their puppy registered? Obviously they couldn't do that if the dog was stolen.

If you registered the dog, the vet has a description of exactly what the dog is like (breed, weight, age, distinguishing marks), and that is enough to file a lawsuit against this "cop."

Go to the officer and tell him to either give the dog back to you or his real owner if not report him to the police. The dog probably wasn't stolen either, he just stole it from you.

Is stealing Legal? of course not. But that cop had a gun, didn't he? Cops like this, they're a disgrace to the cops who are decent people.

Bottle fed it for 5 weeks!! Anyway, perhaps he was the real owner or the real owner decided he didn't want it back, ask.
