I've come across hundreds of atheists here but have yet to meet another one in real life.

We don't exactly troll the streets knocking on doors.
Neither do we preach at a gathering place.
Generally we keep to ourselves and get on with living this life to advantage.
We don't wear religious symbols around our necks.
We don't have a zillion TV channels devoted to not believing.
We don't do our very best to extract money from the gullible.
It does depend upon where you live.
Where are you? Bible Belt? US?
If yes to the US, do understand that religious bigotry in the US is so deep that admitting that one is an atheist will get hate mail, loss of a job, etc.
In the UK - not a problem at all. Everyone I know in the UK is an atheist. Maybe there is one religious-freak in our neighborhood.
ONE.
That's ONE.
Just the ONE.

Hello 'You Had Me At HellNo'

Good name.

Though I am not an Atheist I and also not a theist.
I have meet many people who are both and in fact the number of Atheist is much higher that that of theist.
This may have something to do with the fact that I am English and at home in England there are fewer religious people. and that now I live in Italy where again in comparison to the states the number is much lower.

One thing that I have noticed here though is that most people who openly state that they are Atheist have an email and will respond where as the Theist who attack them don't!

Getting to know people is about being open' is it not?

In a virtual place for a meeting of the mind to hash out the answer to life's questions, we find the atheist.

In a house of god communing in faith believing they already know the answers, we find the christian.

Also the internet weeds out the elderly. christianity, as well as all established religions in the West, are decaying. This is fact. Atheism is growing in the youth.

Heavy internet users like me tend to prefer to interact with machines because they find face to face interaction intimidating. Also, their skills tend to be more scientifically than artistically inclined. Therefore, they tend to place more trust in scientific method and do not see reality in personal terms. These factors tend to make them atheists. Also, because they are less inhibited on the internet than they would be interacting personally, they are bolder with their opinions.

I don't know where you are, but in most of the English-speaking world outside the States, atheists are much more common. If you live in America, that might be an explanation.

are not you over reacting in basic terms a sprint? who's conserving you to an superior prevalent? the theory in God and the theory in no God are the two ideals. Neither has ever been shown, and that i doubt the two will ever be. in some unspecified time interior the destiny anybody needs to seem on the data and their adventure in existence and determine what to have self belief, or no longer have self belief in. i've got self belief in technological know-how and that i've got self belief in God too. i do no longer likely see a contradiction. purely as a results of fact some thing won't be in a position to be shown scientifically does not rule out the potential for it extremely is existence. to illustrate, does unhappiness exist? whilst maximum persons have experienced it, i do no longer comprehend the way it would desire to be shown. yet we settle for it as a results of commonality of our adventure. you're 'the utmost prevalent' whilst it comprises your convictions. So who cares what all of us else thinks!

How would you know?

I know people that I've never discussed religion with. For all I know they could be voodoo practicioners. I tend to take people as they are, not by what faith they are. Try wearing some sort of atheist symbol and see who approaches you ;)

If they're carrying a bible... or a gun, assume they're not atheist.

Okay. lets meet up.

Atheists dont go around holding "I AM AN ATHEIST" signs on their forehead. Nor do they go saying "i'm an atheist" at every chance possible.

This know also, that in the LAST DAYS perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, BLASPHEMERS, disobedient to parents, un-thankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce breakers, FALSE ACCUSERS, incontinent, fierce, DESPISERS OF THOSE THAT ARE GOOD, traitors, heady, highminded, LOVERS OF PLEASURES more than lovers of God .

I deal with atheists all the time face to face...
