I asked my hair care professional that same question and she told me to put some sort of product in my hair to protect it, whether it be leave in conditioner, mousse, or something as the heat from the blowdryer can harm your hair....then flat iron..but always use a product to help prevent damage...and you should always dry your hair first before flat-ironing.

A definite No. There are flat irons that can be used on Wet or Dry but the avg. price is $200 dollars. Like the previous post I suggest you air dry. While your hair is wet apply a heat protectent leave-in so that it will already be applied to your hair when your ready to flat iron.

I don't think it's wise to do it wet all the time. I think what happens is that you end up BOILING your hair dry. Think of it. You have to heat it enough to dry it and the only way to do that is to evaporate the water with extreme heat. A blow dryer doesn't reach 400 degrees to dry your hair.
Furthermore, you really should use the hair balms which protect hair from severe damage while you dry and iron it.
I like putting a dab of pure silk on it afterwards too which really gives it a stunning shine and soft feel.
You don't want to end up with straight but fuzzy hair. You want it to look shiney and healthy. When you look at a shaft and it's all warped despite being straight you know you've done damage.

Blow dry it and then flat iron it. You know how curly mine is and I've had mine flat-ironed just like the rest... but she used a roller brush to get it straight because if you just plain blow dry mine, it will be all frizzy and not work as well. Doing it while it's wet probably will take longer.

you dont even need a blowdryer. its okay to iron but better use fan when drying then iron. although i dont use both since it really damage my hair. i only use blowdryer and iron when there's occassion. i seldom use brush when my hair is wet. using just hands and fan when drying is still the best

Some flat irons are for wet or dry hair, unless its specifically for that I would suggest blow drying first, as it can cause a lot of damage to your hair! Did it smoke while flat ironing it while it was wet? Seems like it would....
Good Luck
