The "Bible" was assembled from ancient stories so that they would not be lost or changed over time. Some stories are factual while others are allegorical stories to teach a lesson such as ADAM AND EVE.

No-one can know the whole story, but obviously we have been around longer than 6000 years.

Hebrew texts were assembled about 100 to 150 years B.C. while the modern christian texts were not finalized until hundreds of years after the death of christ.

It is a testament to the hypocracy of the religious right that some of the early jewish laws were included even though we dont follow them, such as the rules regarding food preparation and feminine hygeine.

The church will tell you that these are Mosaic laws (from Moses) that we don't need to follow any more. Well arent they all ? including the ones about being gay? (sorry but I have a personal stake in that one).

politics had a part in most of it. The most relevant beliefs at the time were etched in stone for all time.

to Jadore7: inspired by God is a pretty vague endorsement.

Something inspired Picasso but that doesnt mean it isnt open to interpretation.

The Bible is a compilation of many books written by different authors - more like an anthology than a book with a single author.

The books in what you probably know as the Old Testament were decided on by Rabbis.

The books in the New Testament were decided on by the Council of Trent.

The Apocrapha is a compilation of Judaic books that could not be definitavely determined to be of divine inspiration.

If the Christians have added to The Apocrapha for their religion, I do not know about it at this time.

I hope that answers your questions.

The bishops of the Catholic Church compiled the 73 inspired books of the Holy Bible once and for all time at the end of the 4th Century. The removal of 7 books by Martin Luther was motivated by the fact that some of these books contained strong teaching on doctrinal issues Luther intended to oppose. Luther actually planned on trashing 10 books of God's Word, but his followers wouldn't allow him to remove the 3 New Testament books he intended to remove. Which is why God still tells us through the Apostle James that faith and works are equally important, while Protestants insist that they are not.

You already have been given some great solutions, yet i will recap: the human beings who say that tend to me ignorant no longer only with regard to the Catholic Church, yet additionally approximately history. They have been probably taught an exceedingly selective, skewed version of history, so a number of them certainly do no longer know that the Catholic Church compiled the Bible and bases its total Church on it and the persevered revelation from the Holy Spirit. They share that habit of skewing history to their benefit with quite some oppressive regimes: Hitler, Stalin, Hirohito in 1937, and greater those days El Qaeda.

Compiled by different "sects" through out history.
I don't think they would want you to read the Gospel of Judas since he is wrongly described as a hate figure, nor the Gospel according to Mary Magdalene which tells of her "special" relationship with Jesus and how the other disciples despised her.
I am sure much more has been discarded and at least as much added over the last couple of millenniums; which makes me smile wryly when confronted with "this is the word of God brigade; but since this is the only evidence they've got to "prove" the existence of God, who can blame them.

St Iraneus of Lyon.....

At that time, Christian beliefs varied massively and Iraneus only included scriptures which said what he wanted them to.

This is why Paul's letters figure so strongly but there is no Gospels of Phillip, Thomas, Judas or Bartholemew....and no Book of Enoch on the Old Testament.

Have a read of Bentley Layton's book "The Gnostic Scriptures"

Have a read of this:

It is a history and as such is not as well researched as Academic books like the one I mentioned above.

Excellent question.

MOTIVATION for the books they put together was of course self-serving. After all, this activity was commissioned and supported by the Roman Empire.

This is a Very, Very interesting subject... and I would not want to spoil the fun for anyone by giving away the plot... but this whole thing is explained in great detail in a free online book... Gospel Enigma. Find it at the top of the list at New Free Books. Enjoy

The Bible as we know it was compiled in the 4th century. However, it consists of books that long pre-dated that by unknown authors, and edited endlessly.

Analyzing the Bible is much like archeology, in that any given book generally consists of several layers that have to be separated out.

Emperor Constantine of Nicea having declared himself Pope then set up the Council of Nicea to decide what was to become available information for the entire Roman Empire and what was to be hidden because of its dangerous contents. Dangerous to the Roman Catholic Church and its power structures and hierarchies, that is. The Bible in its original form is not the Bible that we have been handed. It is the victim of mistranslation and mishandling, in some instances the alteration of one single word obliterated the actual meaning of what was after all the word of God.
