Matt 2:1 and 2:7 ---They were astrologers : one who professes to interpret the influence of heavenly bodies or human afairs. (like tarot readers, omens, palm readers, more like horoscope interpreters) Ones actually whom God are against (Deut.18:10-11)
certainly not one who study the stars for they are called Astronomers.. big difference.
Its interesting to know this STAR that everyone think was a good thing during christmas time ,lead them to Jesus which King Herod wanted them to find him so he can have baby Jesus killed was NOT lead by God. but wanted the astrologers to come back to him & let him know his where abouts to have him killed, this STAR was actually led by who?
put your thinking cap on...

They were wealthy men "from the east" (maybe as far as India) who "saw the star" and came to Jerusalem. They were most likely, astrologers who advised kings and others of the heavens. They were looking up and saw the change and knew something was going on.
Also, notice that they (not three!) came to Jerusalem, not Bethlehem. They did not see Jesus in "a manger" but in a house. (Mat 2:1; Mat 2:7, Mat 2:11.........oh, forget it, just read all of Matthew 2!)
There were 3 gifts so everyone thinks there were three Magi.

No one knows their exact identity, but it is apparent that they followed some astrological traditions.... or to put it more simply, their Spiritual traditions were Eastern.
I may also note that both Jesus and John used the teacher-disciple tradition which is also VERY eastern.
More details on this Eastern connection in this free online book... "Gospel Enigma" Much much more in there.. Find it at New Free Books, right at the top.

The account in the book of Matthew tells you: they were astrologers from eastern parts who "heard" of the birth of a king and came to pay respects to the king. Not worship - respect.

Great question! They were zoroastrian priests, awaiting the birthday of the Lord. They came from Persia (one was from the island of Qeshm) and were called majoosis. Their names were Caspar, Balthazaar and ....ok forgot the third one. Hope someone with Armenian Iranian roots can be of help and name the third one!
