I don't want to put him through pain. But I've heard there can be reprecussions if we don't get his tail cropped for instance; him breaking it. I'd love to hear opinions as to why/why not to crop his tail.

Tail docking is done when the puppies are only days old. Mastiff tails are not meant to be docked. It hurts you when he wags his tail? Take that pain and multiply it by 5. That'll be the pain you'd put him through if you dock his tail. When the puppies are days old, the nerves in the tail are not fully developed, so it's fairly painless, however, as they get older, the nerves develop and it's much more painful. Unless there's a medical reason he absolutely needs his tail docked, you shouldn't dock it.

Seeing a dog without a tail is the saddest thing. A dog’s tail is an extension of his smile.

Oh and there is a possibility he might break a leg one day as well, going to get those chopped off also?

There is a reason docking in now illegal in Australia. I just hope the other countries who continue to do this catches up with the times and stops this cruel and heartless act.

Why is docking, ear cropping and declawing still legal in the states? Many other countries have made these practises illegal, why is the US so behind on this?

even if docking were normal in this breed, which it is not, it's too late now. Docking should be done by a vet when the pups are less than a couple of days old. Just keep an eye on his tail if it seems he's hurting himself, and you'll just have to deal with the bruises of a happy tail dog.

Docking is usually done at three days of age. However there are dogs with "Happy Tail". Some of these dogs injure and re-injure their tails so many times it is actually better to have it docked. In this case though it sounds like you were not prepared for a dog of this size. You need to dog proof your home just as you would for a toddler. Place expensive items up and arrange your home so he cant hurt himself.

I think it would be best to keep his tail undocked. Usually docking is done at 2 to 3 days after the puppy is born. Like you said, why put him through the pain? There's many many many Mastiffs with tails, and they will not/didn't break! Don't worry he will be fine! The procedure is usually just done for cosmetic reasons now, same goes with ear cropping. And if you finally decide you DO want to dock it, which I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope you don't, talk to your vet, don't try it yourself like many other people on here.

Breaking the tail is a rare occurrence. It's too late to crop the dogs tail.

The traditional purpose of cropping a tail is so that it cannot be bitten in a dog fight. To do it is cruel. Your dog is also too old to have the procedure done safely. Just be thankful that your dog is so happy that he can't stop wagging his tail!!

OMG....DO NOT DO IT..cropping{docking is the proper word} has become illegal in europe for great reason! their tail Is part of their balancing system in their body...go to an animal behaviorist..they have a wealth of info!! Could you imagine someone clipping your tailbone? There's no fixing it...oh please..don't! You'll find yourself ashamed..if he's that much of an issue as a family member, find him a WONDERFUL forever home where he is accepted as he is the way God made him...if you have to even think on it..find him a new mommy n daddy who'll adore him as is..please!!

So your dog is happy - wags his tail and it "hurts you" - so you want to cut it off? Selfish much?

So..if you pet your dog too hard and it hurts his head -should your arm be cut off?

There is no health reason to cut off a dogs tail.

As long as you don't slam his tail in any doors - the possibility of him breaking it is very slim. Especially if it is so strong that it can inflict physical pain on you.

ARE YOU CRAZY!!!! i have 2 dogs, a mastiff {daphne} and a rhodesian ridgeback {diamond}. i would never subject my girls to that. it is cruel, mean, and hateful. i do not like tail docking on any breed {i know, some standards call for it} or ear cropping. a tail was out on dogs, because...GOD... wanted them to have tails. if a dog was hurt, and had to have it done it is OK with me, but only for health reasons. just because it stings a little, to remove a tail is nuts. learn to live with it, i have.
