i use the free pdf creator active, the graphics and images are always poor quality when converted. any help really welcome.

Garbage in, garbage out.
If the image size in Word is small, that means the image quality is poor. So, converting to PDF can't improve on the original quality.

I haven't used this particular software, but check that there isn't an option to up the res of the images during the conversion. also check the the image type is supported. if you are converting .gifs for instance, they may not be converting properly...
