You may have a corrupt installer ... go to Microsoft website and search for Installer version 3 ... download it manually and install it ... you should then be able to install the automatic updates

go to add/remove windows and check the box to show updates, see if the update is listed, uninstall it then rerun windows update....if not listed you'll need to search for the file that is downloaded....sometimes it creates a temp folder on the c drive, most of the time its a hidden folder.....so search and select advanced options to look in hidden and system files for the update number......you can also go to the update site select custom install and try reinstalling that way.

I once had a problem like this with Windows Vista, just keep trying until it does install. I was successful after about 15 tries.

ok, i am using windows xp home edition, you dont have to upgrade to sp2 if u dont want to, all the security tools you need is a firewall, pop up blocker and if necessary antivirus.

im on sp1. i used to have sp2, i got rid of it bcoz it is slowing down my pc. if i did have sp2, it wud do an update every week. and now im thinking of using linux os. to answer your question is that dont worry, all u need is a firewall and a pop up blocker(comodo firewall and a pop up stopper (free edition) ).

Your firewall or antivirus is blocking you from getting updates. Disable it temporarily until you update it and then after don't forget to re-enable it. This should work!
