Since Kursk was a battle and not a war, that answer is wrong. So speaking of big tank war, it would have to be WWII, which included Kursk, Normandy invasion, Battle for Moscow, among many others and my favorite of that war, the 3rd Battle of Kharkov which involved the II SS Panzer Corps whose tanks beat a Red Army 7 times its size..

The first time big tank "war" would have been the early battles in North Africa during WWII like other people have already posted. But the very first time tanks were used in war was at the battle of the Mousse- Arrgon in France during WWI .
The British Army unleashed thier new battle machine here for the first time and it was not long before the Germans had their own tanks.
The name tank originated from the British shipping the armored vehicles to France in huge crates marked "Water Tanks" because they wanted to keep the new machines secret until they were used in battle for that the Germans would not be prepared for them on the battlefield.

The largest single tank battle was between Russia and Germany at the battle of Kursk which involved 3,600 Russian and 2,700 German tanks. In terms of total equipment the war of the Eastern front would have the most total armor involved but some campaigns during the Arab-Isreali conflict have involved more individual tanks but in a single battle would have been Kursk.

Probably in size of equipment used it would be the North African campaign between Great Britain and Germany/Italian nazis, later as American forces entered the battle with Patton arriving with his 3rd Army the big push was on, combined Great Britain and U.S. drove the nazis back to Italy, and pushed them further into Germany and punished them serverly with allied bomb attacks, destroying their will to fight, stopping their supply lines and killing the dirty little Hitler in his bunker.
