vista basic is just a minor upgrade from xp and not worth the hassle.....your better off going with vista premium if at all. Otherwise xp home is sufficient

XP Home has more functionality than Vista Basic ... given the choice I'd stick with XP ... I have all operating systems Win98-W2K-Win ME-XP Home- XP Pro-Vista Basic-Vista Business-Vista Home Premium-Vista Ultimate on various computers and I find XP to be the most stable and more compatible with a wider range of software

Win Vista worry-loose is lacking lots of the 'bells and whistles' that make Vista what that's. it is likewise a huge OS and may be a good greater healthy on an eighty gigcontinual and one million gig of ram. choose for XP.

For now XP Home is what i use though i realise that eventually i would have to move to Vista. When i do it would be Vista Home Premium at least. That day is not today :P

I found Vista Basic alright. Since it is a new OS many people are scared to take it as you require little time to get familiar with it. I think we should switch to the new OS Vista by microsoft as more support will be available for this.

Xp home! Vista virtually has no drivers for stuff like printers, modems, scannes, cameras, phones and other things, so they wont work! Vista may look good, but get something u know will work!

Both have about the same functionality probably.

I'd say:

1.5gb or more of RAM - Vista Home Basic
Less than 1.5gb of RAM - XP Home

Also if the CPU isn't dual core, I would lean more towards XP.
