Umm, not trying to be rude, but pretty sure all dogs scratch they're ears.

I have a long haired chihuahua and she had something similar to what you are talking about. We would check her for fleas and/or mites yet she still scratched her ears like crazy. Sometimes it would get to the point where she would start to get scabs on the inside of her ears from scratching them open. Around the same time, we noticed that her hair was starting to thin in certain areas. Had she been short haired, I don't know if we would have noticed. Anyway, we had her to to the vets repeatedly and he eventually tried giving her steroids in shot form. That fixed the problem. It turned out that she had seasonal allergies and this caused her skin to become dry and itchy. It also caused her hair to thin. We have to get her shots regularly now and as long as we do she seems fine. Maybe you should ask your vet to do an allergy test on your dog or at least mention allergies and see what they have to say about it. From what I understand, allergies are very common with chihuahuas and maybe this could be the culprit. Good luck!

My chihuahua has been doing the same thing, when we took her to the vet last week they said it's ear mites. At first they thought it was a yeast infection. Her ears SMELLED real bad. Ask about ear mites and a yeast infection. Not something you want to deal with at all.

If you're still concerned, either take the dog back to the vets and tell them that, or take the dog to another vet for a second opinion. No way can we tell you over the internet what's going on with your dog's ears!

Your dog may have ear mites. He cannot scratch inside his ears. You need to look inside the ear for any signs of parasites and get him treated.

We bought our dogs some anti-itch cream at Wal-Mart. Seems to help. One of the dogs had scratched the hair off his ear! We don't know what it was but their ears had a strong, musky odor and the skin was dry and gray inside the ear. Could just be dry weather I guess.

its itchy..itchiness isnt always caused by parasites..the dog might be having allergic reactions and even psychologically-triggered skin irritations..find another vet..

It's a possibility that it's dry skin - my dog gets it all the time.
