Stephen King is very easy to read, he doesn't use too much difficult vocabulary or very complicated sentence structures and not all of his books are horror, some are fantasy type stories (he has a very good imagination) I used to read a lot of his books when I was 12 - 16 ish - try "the eyes of the dragon", "apt pupil" or "four past midnight" (a collection of short stories) they should all be really easy and cheap to get hold of too because his work is so popular...

I think it would be useful if you read any book which you have watched the movie. Like Bridget Jone´s Diary, Bridget Jones The edge of reason, Madison bridge....
I have just read "True tales of America Life" from Paul Auster, and it´s really good, Short stories about people experiences in life, some of them are funny, some others interesting, and astonishing and scary one as well. You´ll really enjoy it. The vocabulary is not very difficult but with a good dictionary not difficult at all. And since it is about different subjects you can get a lot of new vocabulary.

"Holes" by Louis Sachar is used in many German schools for students studying English. I gave it to a friend in Afghanistan who is studying English and he liked it very much. Also see the list of children's books that have won the Newbery Medal
