In 1928, Yoshisuke Aikawa founded the holding company Nippon Sangyo (Japan Industries or Nippon Industries). "Then name 'Nissan' originated during the 1930s as an abbreviation"[2] used on the Tokyo stock market for Nippon Sangyo. This company was the famous Nissan "Zaibatsu" (combine) which included Tobata Casting and Hitachi. At this time Nissan controlled foundries and auto parts businesses, but Aikawa did not enter automobile manufacturing until 1933.[3]

ITs a New MARKETing Name though about by MR. Datsun trying to break into the US auto sales market / racing asscoiations with the 240 "Z"x known as the Porsche Killer.

He didn't want to stain his "Datsun" name if this Project merger & car was not a success in racing and selling in the European / US markets. So he launched his car under company named NISSAN / Datsun in which if any of you can remember the last 280zx's & 510s had Datsun/ NISSAN on the rear of the cars.
Before the Sentra, Stanza, and 300z was launched in the early mid 80s.

Nissan is simply the english transliteration of a japanese name. The Japanese Kanji word if translated means "Daily Production" or "Japanese Production" since the word Ni has can mean both Day or Japan.

As to the meaning of logo, I cannot find anything useful from their corporate website at:
http://www.nissan-global.com/EN/index.html

It's probably lost in some annual report somewhere.

Basically it means "made in Japan" Japanese word for Japan is "Nihon" or "Ni" for short. Japanese word for made is "sei". Put together as "tango" for global pronunciation you get "Nissan"
