If keeping the Sabbath is part of the 10 commandments and you work on that day when it says you shouldn't, then you break that commandment (and all the other commandments). If someone needs your help in an emergency, such as in an animal-fallen-in-a-pit category, or it is a life-threatening situation for someone, then you help. That has happened to me at times and I pray my way through it - that He will help me get through it as quickly and efficiently as possible. But I don't put myself in a situation that can be left for another time.

As for the punishment, if you want to call it that, for breaking any of the commandments (like killing someone or committing adultery or stealing, etc...) is death - to be more specific - the second death. Most of us will die the first death (a small group will not) but commandment breakers will also die the second death and never spend eternity with God. The one who was stoned to death for gathering sticks in the old testament did so to spite the law. The context of that story is that Israel had come out of Egypt with a great multitude of non-believers who wanted to get away from the plagues. Realizing that the God of the Hebrews can perform such wonders led them to believe they could benefit from being with the Hebrews. Many Hebrews and non-believers had intermarried over the course of years. This had led many to idolatry, to forget that God would keep His promise to free them. They had become a violent and rebellious nation. None of the adults in the wilderness survived except Joshua and Caleb because, unlike the rest, these two chose to serve God and obey His commandments. They knew His commandments were instituted to keep them safe, healthy, and totally connected with God.

It's all about choice. The "most kind God" as you called Him gave us free choice: our way or His way. So, look at your kitchen: is it functional the way it is? If so, leave the "doing" for another time.

The so called sabath day was already not covered at the time of Jesus Christ provided tht you should take a rest for your own self because too much work will lessen your life.

Why would God punish anyone for working on a Sabbath Day? The priests "work" dont they? Are the hospitals supposed to kick the patients out and close down? Should the police and firefighters stayhome to worship? Thats the most ridiculous "law" man has come up with yet!!!!

If you have a relationship with JESUS, there is no punishment. If you do not, the punishment for any sin is eternity in hell. The good news is that GOD wants us all to accept the gift of grace through JESUS.

The punishment used to be stoning. now it is being married to a fat person and living in a trailer. I'd prefer the stoning because the suffering would be over much quicker.
