It's rather annoyng now, saving at checkpoints only, while on PC you can save whenever you want. On older consoles it had a reason for it - very limited memory, but on PS3 or 360 with their huge HDDs? Why developers still use this outdated saving system?

this is actually a very good question.

still, i do like being able to load from a save file into a stable environment, and not having to remember exactly what i was doing at that point

i sure would hate to load a save, wonder why the heck i'm in some woods, and then get attacked by something and die

it's a good question and it's probably because it makes the game more challenging because otherwise you can keep saving when you have full/ high health and you're near the hardest part of the level and instead of starting from the checkpoint and fighting through the level you can just continue from there and have higher health than you would have

hope this answers your question

That is because some people forget what they were doing. I like to start the game at the start of the stage, just in case I miss something and want to get it. It is also good to save at checkpoints, so that when you start again you will be fully healed.
