Reading part of PS2 (laser) has a limited life-span. It doesn't mateer, what you play on it, unless you play it. You'll just waste it's time faster.

Unlike the cartridge based systems of the past i.e. NES, SNES, Genesis, the cd and dvd based consoles can wear out if you play them non-stop for hours on end. The wear and tear on the drive machinism is bound to wear down eventually !

Playing movies won't break the ps2 anymore than playing games ! In the first versions of the PS2, if you played movies more than games the system would stop reading game discs and vice versa but that problem was corrected in the second generation PS2's !

Remember that the dvd drive in consoles is a constant moving electronic component so it will wear out over time ! Just play casually and keep your system free of dirt and dust as much as you can by using a can of compressed air to dislodge any foreign material !

Keep your system in an environment so the air can flow to prevent overheating and heat build up !

maybe but I use my PS2 all the time playing dvd movies, games, etc.

What's the use of not using it? Think about this:

If you don't use that ps2, it will still die

BUT

if you use your ps2, then it will die proudly used.

kind of. the laser is only going to last so long. But it isn't much to worry about. You bought it to be used right? what good is an uneaten cake or an undriven car? Still, it's best to use a regular DVD player if you have one.
