Chicago to Michigan is a long distance? You only have to cross the corner of Indiana. But yes, Amtrak does have service to some major cities in Michigan.

Arrive at the train station about 45 minutes early to check your baggage. They have snack carts on the train that come around every couple of hours . They also have a dining car that serves 3 meals a day but is rather expensive. You can bring some packaged snacks and an apple, orange, chips, things that don't spoil . You can keep your backpacks with you. The bathroom is tiny. you can wash your face, that is all. you will arrive there in desperate need of a shower. Do not leave your bags unattended. They usually have a lounge car where they have snacks and show movies. I think they pass out pillows. Take a sweater or jacket in case the air conditioning is too cool. DON"T leave the station while waiting for your next train...you really do not have enough time. I suppose you could go outside for some fresh air. Get something to eat in the station. The arrival time they tell you is given to you in the local time. your trip will literally be about 60 hours. you need to understand that there are often unexpected delays and trains are often late. When you get to Lansing, there should be cabs waiting right outside the station. Go out and get straight in one. Have a great adventure. there will be some great scenery on the way.

I'm nearly certain that there is direct service between Chicago and Detroit. I take the train yearly from West Palm Beach Florida to Bangor Maine and I love it.
