A reliable way to check if your iron levels are low are to pull the bottom lid of your eyelids out a bit so as to see the conditon and coloring of the inner skin ......... if it is a reddish pink color then your iron levels are fine. if it is pasty and pale looking in color you probably need to eat more iron rich foods. increase the absorption rate of the iron rich foods you eat by eating them with foods that are rich in vitamin C also.
The major symptom of all types of anemia, including iron-deficiency anemia, is fatigue (feeling tired). Fatigue is caused by having too few red blood cells to carry oxygen to the body. This lack of oxygen in the body can cause people to feel weak or dizzy, have a headache, or even pass out when changing position (for example, standing up).
In anemia, the red blood cells don’t have enough hemoglobin.
Common signs of lack of hemoglobin include pale skin, tongue, gums, and nail beds.
Other signs and symptoms of anemia can include:
Cold hands and feet as well as brittle nails
Swelling or soreness of the tongue and cracks in the sides of the mouth
An enlarged spleen
Frequent infections
Funny thing is that this is a symptom of B12 deficiency also .......... - fatigue and exhaustion - reason being i guess is that iron needs ample supplies of vitamin B12 in the body to be properly used by the body. So you could actually be eating more than enough iron rich food in your diet but without enough vitamin B12 to help assimilate it you would become iron deficient.
Foods that are rich in vitamin B12 are:- skimmed milks and cheeses, fish and eggs and organ meats such as lambs fry and kidneys (these last three nail the iron and B12 together).
Other symptoms you may be suffering from due to B complex deficiency are headaches and migraines, nausea and vomiting, excessive sweating, dizzy spells and loss of balance, insomnia and constipation, depression, irritability and moodiness, inability to think clearly, fainting, chest pains and heart palpitations and tingling and prickling and numbing sensations in the outer extremities..............
The B complex of vitamins is a water soluble complex and as such our bodies can neither store or produce them. Therefore we need to ingest them on a daily basis or suffer the consequences as you unfortunately appear to be ....... quite scary actually if you don't realise the vitamin factor.
The B complex of vitamins is essential for healthy digestive, neural and immune system functioning.
If you are lactose intolerant or vegetarian (as i am) then it is really important in aiding your body deal with all kinds of daily stresses for you to take a good quality multi B complex tablet on a daily basis. Get one that includes all the B's ie: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 as they work best as a group.
when you take your daily supplement ensure that you take it with some type of calcium rich food ie: low fat cheese or milk or a calcium supplement as B12 needs calcium to be properly assimilated by the body.
When our bodies are placed under added stress ie: sickness, new job, new home, school studies or just daily life really..... oh Christmas too will bring on the stress......... the B complex of vitamins are usually the first group to get used up and we therefore need to adjust our intake accordingly.
When you are getting any stress related symptoms or any of the above mentioned symptoms simply take another B tablet. As they are water soluble our bodies will simply excrete any excess in our urine.
Drinks loads of fresh filtered water too as the healthiest and happiest body will always be the most hydrated one.
Try to cut back on the things that will rob you of your precious B complex of vitamins too ie: caffeine, sodas and soft drinks, alcohol are all brilliant B complex thieves ......... things such as the oral contraceptive, eoestroegen supplementation, antiobiotics, antidepressants, laxatives, aspirin, diuretics will all also do a great job of robbing you of your B's.
Crikey, sorry that was so long winded, but i just get the feeling that it may be a simple B12 deficiency.

Low iron problem cannot be cured by consuming more iron. In fact, eating too much iron can result in heavy metal poisoning - that's what iron is. Low white blood count has nothing to do with low iron. It's the red cell that has iron, not the white. In the 1980's and part of the 1990's many manufacturers were tauting that they fortified product with high amounts of iron, but it turned out that high amounts of iron was causing all sorts of health problems for their consumers. This is the reason why you don't see the "fortified with iron" on labels any more because food makers since have stopped adding iron to drinks, cereal, and other prepackaged food.

I lost a lot of blood when I gave birth and after that my haemoglobin was low - I was anemic. I was prescribed Iron tablets.
I felt very weak, even a short walk outside would exhaust me. I was very pale. My feet and ancles were swolen, because when the body has to little blood it tries to fill in the gap by retaining water.
If you are concerened , go see your doctor he can find out if you have low iron levels with a simple blood test.
Women have in general lower iron levels.

If your iron is low you may feel fatigue, more than usual. The only way to truly find out is getting your blood drawn. A lot of females have low iron, d/t loosing blood during our period. If you feel that it is low, it wont hurt you to take an over the counter iron supplement. Or eat more green leafy veges.
Note: the iron supplements may cause constipation. They make your stool thick and tarry.

Check your gums. The color of your gums should be reddish pink. If it is lighter than that -- predominantly pink or even whitish pink then you have iron deficiency. I adopted this check from the way the vet determines if my dogs were iron deficient.
