Friend,
I am an Indian and follow Hinduism. So I answer from that point of view, though it is same as in any religion.
Though God, as you said is Omnipresent and Omniscient and Omnipotent, our human minds (majority please ) are not that steady and thoughts will be just emerging in it without an order or a sequence or a meaningful relation at all.So mind is compared to a Monkey which will be jumping from one branch to another and hanging and doing so many irrelevant things. It will not be steady normally unless asleep.
So with that type of mind to contemplate on on an abstract thing (sorry for the word ) like GOD is highly impossible.
If one sits in his reading room and wants to do prayer his mind will not allow him to do so for a few moments without internal disturbance. There will be so many thoughts ,unrelated to God and simply you end up within minutes. You may read for an hour a religious book of prayers, but the mind will be thinking on its own about so many things like evening appointments or Cinemas etc etc.
Suppose you go to a library, just imagine, with a friend .Your friend normally goes there and spends reading for one or two hours. You go with him.He is lost himself in reading a book of his choice. You can not make noice as you have to observe Silence there. So you will be forced to take book by yourself.A book or a news paper or some thing and you read some thing. You may read some paras or see some photos or read a news paper bits..but you will read .You can not sit silently without reading there.Others are all reading , so automatically you too read some thing .
Similarly the places like Temples ,Churches, and Mosques are necessary as there you are forced at the initial stages to forcibly do what others do...that is Pray to HIM.
As every person there is praying or reciting or doing Bhajan or some thing , you can not be idle there. So you too are forced .Gradually after some time you will be interested in going there. Then after some more time you start reading willfully and try to understand what you read. You listen to the Lectures there and gradually understand HIM.
In course of time your mind becomes steady and you are in love with Him while praying.Without any body telling you you visit the place of worship. After some progress you get a glimpse of Him.Then you feel His presence every where and understand the real meaning of Omnipresent.
If you come to that stage then all places are same and you can pray underneath any tree or in your reading room or in beach or in the midst of mob.But to come to that stage the visits to places of worship is a must.
So those places of worship are vitally IMPORTANT for your progress.
Thats how I feel.

These buildings, dedicated to "worship" (focus on the Divine) are symbols and conveniences for those who have yet to awaken to the Divine within...my personal cathedral is any tree in any forest, or any forest in any part of the world, or anywhere where Nature celebrates Life. This is where i am "yoked" to the Absolute, the Light. While the "outer" only echoes the "inner," it touches the place within that is quickened and enlivened/activated. When one awakens, one knows that the "God" of which you speak is both within ourselves and in everything or everyone we experience in the outer. We are not separated, except through the sleep of ignorance, from All That Is. It is in the silence that our connection to the One is proclaimed, whether that be in a dedicated building, in Nature, in a glance from a stranger, looking into the eyes of a friend or loved one (especially a child), sitting in meditation, observing the ego's limitations, or any other moments of deep awareness that lift us from our sleep. Your point is well taken, my friend: the Absolute is ever and everywhere present. I am Sirius

In a civilized society, "there is a place for everything and every thing has to be in its rightful place!" So in the midst of tall buildings, shops, roads, parks, play grounds, etc.,a building is set apart as the"House of God!" In the clean and serene atmosphere therein one could be humble before his Lord and sincere in his worship! The Holy Quran avers that "places of worship". like Churches, Synagogues, and Masjids are the places where God's name is remembered very much .Hence, the very next verse authorising "Jihad" (fightimg in the way of God), in the HolY Quran enjoins the fighters to protect them at all costs! (Holy Quran 22:40).

Yes, God is omnipresent, but do we see Him everywhere,in everything at every time? If we do,then, only then, there is no need for temples, etc.
To see God in everything, I must first see it in myself as my true being,my Soul and believe me those who reached that within themselves have discovered that Self within is in fact connected to everything else that is existing and in that connecting thread only Love flows to everything ( Ramakrishna Paramahamsa,Ramana, Kanaka, Kabira and so on from the culture I am familiar with ,who have said it so).Such person need not go to temple, they themselves are the temple! Going to temple is to remind ourselves about His omnipresence, otherwise we would have been lost in mundane business.

God is everywhere, but He expects us to participate in public worship and private worship. Churches provide us with a shelter from the storm, while the local theologian motivates us to have courage and go on for another week.

Yes, they must be their and are inseperable part of worship in particular society. They are community centers and once they were regarded as Socio-Economic Centers. Every individual has to worship his deity alone at home secretely. For common dialogue and exchange of pleasures and griefs, people assemble here. When every one of the community assembles and meets fellows ones, views are exchanged. There are gossips and chit-chats on many ethical issues. Elders can observe development (ethical) of younger ones. There are purports on some fundamental principles of that religion. Those who have some doubts, get them cleared here in big assembly publically so that everyone who has alike problems, doubts, confusions and hurdles, mental or psychological, get cleared here and the elders have to clear these honestly to keep the society bound together. There is some icon / idol or anything representing the deity and all bow before it humbly, politely and devotionally. It is regarded as supreme place. Those who are rich and generous donate something secretely and the person entrusted to look after the place distributes it first to needy ones and later on to all, as prasadam or gift of the God. Every one is having his own house and hence the deity should also have one. Because of recent misuse of these places, we feel it problem creating centers, but actually it is not the case. There is one important intention behind it, " my house is veery beautiful and house of my deity shoul be the most beautiful and none should compare and compete with it, it should be supreme always". While entering such devine places, mind and body get rejoiced, fresh, enthusiastic and joyful with devotion. Everyone in the assembly are on one common platform and before deity, none is bigger or smaller, superior or inferior, rich or poor, all are one in the eyes of deity and one can very well learn this from these places.

In Ramayana , Ravana was praying only Lord Shiva , he was not accepting other beliefs > So he was killed by Lord Vishnu. The attitude of people like Ravana who donot accept others' beliefs are devils and demons.
God is an intelligent and Knowledged person to understand this secular faith.
If a religion does not meet the social values and if it does not establish social harmony ... and violates social values ... then there is no difference between terrorism and religion.
By accepting Multiple number of Gods sentiment, through which social harmony and secularism can be established>
God or religion is not such a bad element to say it “there is only one god that is I , if u don’t pray me there is no use and I don’t save you at the end” ,> If God says it , he is not a god it is a DEVIL and Demon.
********
Even the pope in his secret place of worship prays Shivalinga> It is given along with photo of Lord Shiva in Encyclopedia of Britanica>
*******
AT MECCA ALSO THERE IS SHIVA LINGA WHERE MUSLIMS DO PRAY FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. THE SHAPE OF IT IS LIKE SHIV LINGA. MUSLIMS TREAT IT AS A STONE FROM HEAVEN.
********
