I'll vote for you too! I think if we can finally start taking religion out of the government we'll be in better shape.
I know in theory the US is based on separation between church and state. But if the majority of politicians and political leaders are religious those religious views will impact the things that happen in the country.
To the person abouve who mentioned the boyscouts and such. No, the boyscouts are not being sued for their religious views. I don't even think they were sued... I think they just had their meeting house taken away. Why? because they were using a state funded place and they were discriminating against gays. They can be discriminatory all they want but they have to pay for their land b/c the state cannot support a freeloading group if they are going to be discriminatory.

I don't know really, but I can tell you why people want a religious President over an atheist one.
Most people have their own "personal" god that doesn't come from any religion and which doesn't require them to change, and seems to match up with their sense of morals perfectly. This type of God is mainly used when someone dies.
Everyone stands around the grave, and says things like "He's in heaven now" or "She's in a better place". No matter how the person believed. They did it at Anna Nicole Smith's funeral and she was a porn star. People just want to believe in something but they don't always want to change their way of life for it.
To most people, atheists aren't good. No one wants someone at a funeral saying "Well, he's dirt now". They don't have a different well thought out stand point of their own, they just want to believe the opposite, just for that bit of time.
Also, no one wants a President they expect to defend their country, be someone who doesn't believe in an afterlife, because then he's not sending soldiers to die and go to heaven, he's just sending soldiers to die.
Most people don't think about religion or god very much.

Someday, maybe...but not anytime soon.
In some states, atheists are not allowed to hold public office. I don't know a lot about that, but I saw it on some atheist organizations' web sites. Example:
"The Bill of Rights of the Texas Constitution (Article I, Section 4) allows people to be excluded from holding office on religious grounds. An official may be "excluded from holding office" if she/he does not "acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being."

I think there have been many atheist presidents. Part of being elected up to now has been hiding who you truly are from the stooges who elect you. Being a Christian is way more than attending mass or holding a Bible for a photo opp.

If you read a bit about US history, you will find out that almost all presidents in the bginning of the republic tried to keep religion out of politics. Several of them did not believe in the christian god. Washington was a freemason.

Eventually all religion will be eliminated from everything government and it will probably be illegal to even discuss publicly anything to do with God. As it is, schools cannot mention God, sports are slowly moving away from any mention of God, the courts cannot mention God, all of the historic symbols of God are being removed by court orders, private organizations like the Boy Scouts are being sued over any religious foundations or beliefs.... even churches get sued if they hold to their beliefs such as against homosexuality.
So eventually there will be no "In God We Trust" and it will just be an atheist nation.... doomed of course.

How do we know there hasn't already been one? :) A lot of atheists have been afraid to "come out".. there very well could have been one. Or two or three.
As to an out in the open atheist president? Sure, someday I think we will. I don't think I'll live to see it, but it's bound to happen someday.
