Depends on their age.

Children over the age of about 8, I would suggest neopets.com I loved it and started playing when I was 10 (and still like it). Just make sure you limit their computer time; it's addicting. You also need to make sure you sign them up for a 13 and under account, that way they can't access the message boards. It's safer for kids under that age.

Also, if you don't mind spending a couple bucks, webkinz is an excellent option for kids. It's a lot like neopets, but it costs money. You buy a small stuffed toy (I've seen them at Book-A-Million and I'm sure they have them a Toys R Us) for about 15 bucks and then you register it online, which allows your child to play with a virtual version of their toy. They can also buy more toys and register them under the same name. My cousin and a little girl that I babysit owns one and they love it. They're pretty popular toys and the website is very safe and fun.

Sites like neopets and webkins are good because they earn virtual points for playing games or accomplishing tasks and then can buy virtual items. It teaches responsibility money-management.

Another safe website is KidsCom.com It's a little lame for kids over the age of 11 I'd say, but it's super-secure. You have to send in a written permission form for your child's account to be activated. I had an account as a child and it's very educational and safe. You can also earn KidsCash by playing games, only these points you can redeem for real-world items like books, dvds, and games.

I would also suggest buying some children's computer software. I remember playing with Reader Rabbit and a few other educational programs. Believe me, as a kid, educational programs are really fun and beneficial.

elouai.com has doll-makers which are fun.If your children like Harry Potter, the official HP site (harrypotter.com) has games as well. It helps if you give an age-group, but both of these sites can amuse almost all ages.
