I am curious how they work. You think that the cops detector would not pick up so he has a reason to pull you over. Just curious.

Radar units emit a certain frequency radio wave. The detectors are programmed to this same frequency. When they detect a signal, they beep.

Think of it like your FM radio. You tune it to a certain frequency, and you pick up the station that transmits that frequency.

They do not interfere with the police radar, they just detect it. The one that interferes is called a radar jammer, and those are illegal.

A radar uses radio waves.
A radar detector is a radio that picks up radar signals and beeps when it does.

Well radar fires a radio wave out at an object and measures the speed it comes back and that is the speed the object is going.

The detector looks for those radio waves and goes off when it receives one. Watch out though, they do not work well with LIDAR, which uses a laser wave instead of radar.

ALSO If radar detectors are illegal in your area, watch it, because police have radar detector detectors. I am not kidding.

I think it just warns you that cops are nearby and to watch your speed.
