This person i know (my best freind) kissed someone with possibly a cold sore and he is freaking out like he has cancer is it really that big of a deal? I just think that the word Herpes freaks him out!? How can i get him to relax oh yea and he thinkgs he got like a month after he kissed her... I think its not that big of deal am i right?

Cold sores and fever blisters are a form of herpes virus, however it is not the kind that is an STD. Most everybody has this virus in them and has experienced one or the other. Fever blisters can start from too much sun on dry lips. You don't have to kiss someone with an outbreak to catch it. It happens all by itself. As to cold sores, they hurt, they are ugly but many people get them because that is the way their system is. I would not kiss someone who has a cold sore as you might trigger the inactive virus you carry to become active. Just dry lips that occassionally crack in the corner of your mouth can cause a cold sore to form. A trip to the dentist where your mouth is open wide for a long time for a teeth cleaning can crack the corner of your mouth and cause a cold sore. It really is no big deal. Just not attractive if you have something social planned.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

Cold sores are no big deal. Some people get them, others don't. When I have a cold sore, I can kiss my partner as often as I like and he's never caught one in the 10 years we've been together. I have 2 kids and one of them is like me and gets coldsores, the other doesn't.
The best treatment for a cold sore is a cream containing Acliclovir. If treated early enough - at the "tingling" stage before eruption - the cold sore may not even appear at all.
There are a few over-the-counter creams containing Acliclovir at any pharmacy. Around 1/2 the population gets cold sores and it's nothing to be ashamed or worried about.
Apart from spreading by touch (ie kissing), cold sores can be spread by using the same cup/glass as someone with a coldsore. Another cause is sunburn and/or windburn (or any trauma) to the lips, and even stress.

Millions of people have oral herpes. Cold sores are very common and nothing to worry about. Lots of over the counter stuff helps clear them too.

As far as I know (and I'm pretty sure about this), what he has is Herpes Simplex, not STD herpes or shingles herpes. It will usually only pop up if you get sick and it can be treated with ointments like Lipactin as soon as he feels one coming.
Long story short, it's really not serious at all.

most people already have the oral herpes virus anyway, so it wont matter if they kissed. and herpes is NOT in any way as bad as cancer so tell him to stop freaking out.

You're right; cold sores are not that big of a deal. It's called herpes because the virus that causes cold sores is that type of virus, but it's not the same disease as genital herpes.
