Why do women wear hats and headcoverings to church? I just discussed this with my parents this morning. If I have my hat on, I take it off because it's more respectful to not wear a hat in church, as the same in a classroom. But the veils don't seem necessary, especially since most of the women's veils at church are only 3 in. in diameter and doesn't seem to be anything but decoration.

I'm Catholic. In my understanding, the church never gave the laity permission to stop wearing veils to church.
No mention was made of it in Vatican II when many customs of the Mass were changed. Around that time women slowly got away from wearing veils, (at least in my area, a farming community in Illinois)
Years ago some priests still had a small table of veils in back just in case you "forgot to wear your own". I have not seen that tradition in years either.
Occasionally I will see some devout families or older ladies still doing it. I think it shows great love and respect and I admire those who still make the effort to do it.
I would not be mad if it came back into church dogma. But I personally don't miss it.

Its just a custom and ancient tradition from the 1st century Paul advises as a reverent form of dress. but if some modern women feel no reverence from doing it they see no purpose in it. The reason Hassidic Jews dressed in black suits with a strange looking too small hat high above the normal resting place for a hat, they told me in Jerusalem is its a symbol that Someone is higher than they are. Thus what looks strange and weird to the world is beauitful and holy because of its meaning.

I don't know.. I've never had a problem with hats. The Bible says women should be modest in what they wear, but it never said we had to cover our heads to church. I believe the main reason as to why we go to church is to worship God.

No actually I feel it is a personal devotion. I do cover for Church and elsewhere but I do so for personal reasons. I do however wish more did and that others who were considering it would gain the courage to try it. Still it is a personal thing.

Their hair IS their covering.
1 Corinthians 11:15 -- But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
Why cover up your covering?
edit: oops, I see this now:
1 Corinthians 11:6 -- For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
None of the ladies in our church wear hats. We just don't get all uptight about stuff like that.

Humility is not found in the garment but in the person wearing the garment. One can cover themselves from head to foot in sackcloth and walk down the street wailing and gnashing their teeth; it does not make them humble.
To be concerned about the conduct of others, also, is not the mark of humility. A humble person is too preoccupied with their own conduct to worry about the conduct of others.

I thank God I am not a legalistic any more and can see the pastor with out a hat in my way!
There was a reason for that in those days.

You know, Sometimes I wear a hat or head covering when I pray out of respect to God. If the Holy Spirit leads you... Do it!

I feel perfectly fine...sometimes the wearing of hats and other head coverings could be a distraction to people...and it's never good to distract people from entering in the Lord's presence...
