(I am talking only about taxes), let´s say for a 2005 VW basic car..

If, as I assume, you're comparing the US to the UK based on your questions, it would be more in the UK because of fuel prices.

Road tax is the easy bit. it services and repairs which will cost at least £300 pa
Road tax about £150 fuel about £30 a week it you use it for work say 10 miles away. Parking fees and so on

In taxes only, you have road tax which varies from 100 -200 per year then fuel tax wich isw about 70% of the cost of the fuel £1.07 per ltr. I recently worked out the running costs of my wifes astra its bran new and doesn`t have to have mot yet, It has had no new parts yet. but does a lot of mileage. It worked out at around £43.50 per week. insurance, road tax, diesel.

If you're American, then save up cos the dollar's very weak lately. The English pound is the strongest currency in Europe, so be prepared. Oh and if you'll be going to live in London then make sure you have enough money because it's expensive! Not sure about the precise amount though, but it's not that cheap when you're using pounds.

Too much.

If you add you the annual costs of MOT, running repairs and servicing inc tyres, road tax, insurance and fuel...I think you'll find it comes to about £10-20p/w
