Why do people tend to hate Atheists?
It's a belief... why is it being discriminated against?

To Gabriela:

I actually typed this in and only one question appeared, but it was not the same. It was similar though.

Doesn't evolution and... science kind of prove a little bit that Atheism seems... somewhat proven?

I think it's because of the false idea and the generalization that Theists are spreading to their children.

I remember being told the story about a group of Atheist soldiers torturing and killing a lil girl who picked up Jesus' image and kissed it.

I remember singing a song that there are only two ways in living this life: the way of God (proclaimed as good) and the way of evil.

These things, although very simple, had built my my young impression towards Atheists that they're all evil — which is NOT true.

Ignorance is the cause that most of Atheists are frowned upon.

I don't think that athiests are frowned upon any more than any other group of people by another group of people. Athiests frown upon the Christians, Christians frown upon the athiests, Jews and Muslims hate eachother. Unfortunately this will never end. There will be people on both sides of every issue that are able to debate calmly and collectively, but there will be even more people on both sides that want to just wipe out the other side so that they don't have to defend their side anymore.

I am a Christian, and I was at work the other day when somebody mentioned that he was an athiest but that he used to believe in God. I asked him why and somebody stopped us because they were afraid that we would get into a brawl. We both told him though that we were equally capable of carrying on an intelligent conversation on the subject without it getting ugly and we were right. We talked for quite awhile about it before work actually interrupted us. We did not get ugly over it, and it didn't become a "My belief is right because..." discussion. I have more respect for him now, because he was able to give me logical reason for his belief instead of insulting me as many people in his situation would have (as I've also seen first hand). If more people had the kind of discussion that we had, then there would be alot less tension all around.

Sadly enough though, we will never see that day.

Atheism is a religion. A religion in believing in themselves and not GOD. The US government grants atheism their own 501-C3 just like a church with tax exempt status.

There are three monotheistc religions in the world: Judaism, Christianity (Catholics included here), and Islam. The second is a development of the first, the third is an outgrowth of both.

The three mentioned above are all monotheistic meaning there is only ONE GOD. This idea goes against religions who are polytheistic which, like Hindu's, beleive in millions of male gods and millions of female gods.

Most of the United States believe in a Materialistic God and they are Universalistic for the most part. Materialistic goes against believing in the nature of God. Instead of believing God is Spirit. They put their trust and life into matter. Universalist's believe that all religions and all God's are acceptable. But don't tell a Universalist about the bloodly human sacrifices of pagan wiccans, they suddenly will reject all religions. If you reject one, you must accept only ONE.

What flys in the face of every Atheistic Believer (the belief of no God), is the Universal exsistence of God in the hearts and minds of people globally. Study Voltaire and you will hear him pray to God in a thunderstorm.

Ferguson was once quoted as saying, "I am not an atheist; I do not say that there is no God; But rather an agnostic; I do not know that there is a God." "I thank God I am an Atheist", were the opening remarks of an argument to disprove the existence of God.

Like the once young convert to atheism was once heard to say to coterie of unbelievers: "I have gotten rid of the idea of supreme Being, and I thank God for it."

Why is Atheism frowned upon so much you ask. It simply silly. It is a sign of arrogance and is most people with great intelligence acknowledge that it is by design and a Designer and not by default or evolution in which we can reason.

You are absolutely right when you say that atheists are discriminated against. As an atheist, I find most Christians to be very closed minded people. It's their way or the highway so to speak. Most are unable to debate the existence of God because they have been brainwashed at such an early age to believe in him/her. They have been taught since they were children that to dispute the existence of God leads to eternal damnation. That's pretty scary stuff even for adults. Can you imagine the effect that would have on a child? Believe or spend eternity in hell. All I can say is...let's come out of the Dark Ages people.

because we are apparently the source of all the worlds problems

Now I don't know about my fellow atheists but the only time I was ever in a police station was to make a statement after *I* was knocked over by car. I have been told my more than one person that I'm kind and helpful. I can also return to the compliment to the atheists that I personally know.

I think it's one of the few ways to sell religion - if you don't believe in it you're automatically a bad person

We suffer things such as this: "Because they're bigots, and the hate anything they do not agree with or cannot understand.

Myself, I'm a christian, but it's not for me to judge your beliefs."

Does that not reek of hypocrisy?

Atheism is the antithesis to organized religion, which is a very powerful mechanism of control. Religion uses fear to manipulate people to do things, donate money, or even vote a certain way. Naturally, any entity that resists this system is made to be looked down upon to try to coerce subjugation. In essence, it's a domination issue carried out vicariously through the individuals of a religion.

because it is the ultimate spiritual blindness...
if a man says "i hate God" at least he sees that He exists, but the man that says "there is no God" is foolish because he cannot even see the obvious. if they use science to say there is no God why does the math point to a creator and not natural processes over time? and if there is no God why does man have a soul and a conscience and an innate need to worship something? if there is no God why is the world and life and everything that supports it so deliberately designed in everyway? DNA, cosmological precision, everything is too perfect to be accidental harmony, balance, precision, design, function, purpose, and meaning.

that is why it is, but yet it is gaining popularity in the western countries...so look for the consequences of Godlessness in the near future.
2 Timothy 3: 1-5 (Godlessness in the Last Days)
"But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them."

Atheism is not a belief but an absence of one. Calling atheism a belief is like saying its a hobby for a person "not" to collect stamps.
It is human nature to dislike people who believe the exact opposite of themselves. I wouldn't say hate but you have nothing in common.

Because all atheists are pinko-commie anti-American bastards.

Seriously, I consider it a hang over from the cold war when anything that the communists did was automatically bad. That is the time when we got god shoehorned into the pledge of allegance etc.

Meanwhile athiests come in all forms. Also we outnumber the Jews about 3 to 1 but they Jewish lobby is still one of the most powerful in Washington.

Maybe we should get Bill Gates and Warren Buffet to bankroll an atheist lobby.

I think the discrimination goes both ways. But I guess the fact that someone doesn't believe in anything without proof, goes against everything all religious dogmas teach which is to believe just because you are told to, no proof, no fact, just faith. Some people do believe that life without faith is not worth living. But they don't understand that even thou the faith in a god is not present you still have faith in humanity. And that is a life definitely worth living.
