As a christian who didn't really believe I struggled for a long time. I thought there was something wrong with me for not believing. I thought I was going to hell for not believing. It wasn't til I realized I had a choice did life become easier and more enjoyable. I seriously considered suicide when I was 11 because this ate at me so much. When I decided that I didn't care what other people thought of my lack of belief an incredible weight was lifted from me and I've felt better ever since.

because I can question things and not be worried that some big lightning bolt from the sky is going to land on my head
I am not sure what I believe but that is the point, I can say that without worrying about going to hell every minute of the day.................its like being free to think what I want and not what I have been told to since i was a child and what I remember about that was this..............i was always questioning things then too but I used to pray that God didnt kill me in my sleep for thinking those things...............is that belief or fear? I was terrified of him and that is all...............

I am happier as an Atheist because not only am I not constantly wondering what's right and wrong according to the Bible, but I'm also not constantly questioning my beliefs and feeling as if all my questions haven't been answered by something that claims to have all the answers.

I really think you feel so called "free" because your misconception of "freedom" has been surrended over to your fulfilling of fleshly desires. Real "freedom" is in Christ who sacrificed his life for a world who didn't even love him. A freedom that gives eternal liberties to love.

I'd say Sleep Well!
Edit:
I'm happier now because I am more consistent with my morals, and I'm not worried about what is and is not a sin.
I'd think about it more, but it's about time to hit the hay.

There is a way that seems right to a man,
but in the end it leads to death.

There are no "former" Christians. If you have been indwelt with the Spirit, born anew, given the faith to believe, forgiven, redeemed and justified by the work of Christ, you are in for life. You don't walk away from that. God has never, nor will ever, lose one of His chosen.
1Jn 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us. For if they were of us, they would have remained with us; but they left so that it might be revealed that they all are not of us.

I've been able to stop wrestling with what I am supposed to believe vs. what my logic and intellect tells me is true.
