I am from the south as well, and one word that it seems a lot of people have trouble with is "chimney". They pronounce it as if it is spelled "chimbley".

I moved from Germany to the Uk 10 years ago and I agree with the debate about 'J'. When I first came over I couldn't even hear the difference between words like 'juice', 'choose', 'chews' and 'jews' let alone pronounce them because they all sounded the same. I was also very concious not to pronounce 'w' like a 'v' so people wouldn't take the mickey out of me, but that just led to me pronouncing 'v' like 'w'. Got the hang of it now though I've been told. In fact if I tell people I'm German they seem to think I make it up to make myself more interesting. I could think of better things to make up if I was going down that route, believe me...

lol .. Glen G is right ..

Many Northeners are surprised when I tell them i'm from the south .. theres only few words I say with an accident. Its mostly the southern.. .. or i mean .. cajun slag that I use ..

When I 1st met my boyfriend (from detroit) he didn't think I had an accident until he hung around me long enough .. and started to make fun of my *aw* like Glen G mentioned .. He says I also pronounce *want* strangely .. I pronouce it almost like *wont* .. and I pronouce *almost* like *ulmost* .. thats about it

Its not that we have a hard time pronouncing it .. its just becomes a habbit .. kind of like .. instead of saying *GOING* or *LAUGHING* .. many pronounce it *GOIN* or *LAUGHIN* .. dropping the G just makes it easier and becomes a habbit.

"New Orleans" also has many pronunciations ..

- New OR - LINS (the way I pronounce it)
- New OR - LEANS
- NAW'LINS

just depends where u are from

I'm as Southern as they come. The only thing I have a problem with is the long " I " sound. You know, as in five, or devine, or nine. Most of the time, I don't even bother to try. I have a distinct drawl. I am what I am.
I have a customer in Wisconsin and we laugh and poke good natured fun at our respective unique accents every time we speak to each other.

One of my customers is from Chicago and pronounces it, Chicargo.
For the record, President George Bush Jr. was born in Connecticut!!
So, I guess, pronouncing words incorrectly isn't just a Southern thing.

Im a natural born southerner yet I don't have an accent at all, so I'm free to observe the grammatical errors of my friends. It seems that saying "sawhorse" is difficult.

A person from the Deep South tends to diphthongize the "aw" vowel sound as in "salt" and "dog" for instance. My sister-in-law from Milton, Florida pronounces these words as [saw-oolt] and [daw-oog]. She also often pronounces "right" and "light" as [raaht] and [laaht], and "important" as [impord-ent].

They don't mispronounce words, they have ACCENTS. If you live in Boston, does that mean you don't pronounce CAR correctly?
