A recent question (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071229215705AA43ywl&r=w#E41RDGO_JzKauW6KaO4Z ) asked Christians to consider the HYPOTHETICAL possibility that god does not exist. Why did over half of those answering fail tto accept the HYPOTHETICAL premise for their answers?

missprissy, we are not saying that god does not exist, just asking you to consider the possibility. What would the world be like without god? Use your imagination.

Yes, I understand hypotheticals and I enjoy these sorts of questions regardless on what subject it is on. I'm Catholic and believe in God. However, I can appreciate an hypothethes to generate alternate scenarios that pertain to existing belief systems and even challenge them. If God didn't exist, I believe that we would be still creatures of faith. Whether that be spititual or otherwise. Everyone believes in "something" or needs to believe in something. These things, for many are a validation of their existence. Damn, I'm sure some people believe beer to be a good thing to worship. As humans, we would find something else to occupy the void because our values, morals, ethics etc are the things that shape us as human beings and promote order in society and define boundaries (How we live our lives and interact with eachother and the environment). Great question. One of the best so far. On a final note, even if God was proven to be fictitious, at the end of the day, there would always be those who would disregard the facts and find it hard to accept and move on due to a thing called "theory perserverance".Then the athiests would be having one hec of of a party with a few "I told you so's" LOL. Perhaps Athieism would be the new God? Perhaps, the world would go into total anarchy and all the Priests etc would have to go into hiding due to the anger of the people who feel duped whilst they burn down all the places of worship. Maybe even a bra burning ceremony for bibles! Maybe proving God doesn't exist would be the start of WWIII. Some may even think that this is a license to do whatever nasty things they please and we'll have a crime rate increase of %1000. Think about the fallout and trying to undo all of those years of indoctrination that was proven to be bogus. So many possibilities and so little space for me to ramble in.

I'm a Christian who LOVES hypothetical questions!
I think it's a mindset really - either you can think in theory and hypotheticals and still be strong in your faith or you can't. It's not a good or bad thing, but it's a skill. Lawyers have to do it. They argue a defense that they don't necessarily believe in, but they do it for their client. It also depends on security in faith too.
Don't lose faith (haha) in all Christians - there are some who know what a hypothetical question is!

If i had a vision right now and told me that God doesnt exist and i will just become dirt then i would starting training and meditation myself to accept that fact. because i cant run from it. however i have to believe that some supreme being had to create the world. because what about supernatural powers? such as pychics? or others? someone had to lit the fuse for the big bang to happen. i dont deny that the big bang is a very good theory.

I found their answers fascinating and I'm glad you asked this question about hypothetical considerations. It's almost as if their faith has suspended some aspects of their rationality - not all aspects, but some of them.

We do believe in a hypothetical premise! But because you fail to believe why should I take time out of my day to think about your hypothetical when it is against everything I believe in !

Probably because they feel threatened and forgetting the question, jump to defend God. He doesn't need defending, lol
