Had one last night. Once I realized what I was experiencing, I managed to calm down and wait it out. (You know, those dreams where you wake up in the middle of the deepest sleep and you find yourself unable to move?)

My first reaction was that it was a spiritual attack. But now I'm not sure. After all, what would I have done that would warrant such a thing? That pizza I ate? Staying up till 3:30 am? Reading the apocryphal gospel of St Bartholomew?

I used to get the same thing, what I thought was sleep paralysis. I remember waking up from one of those dreams unable to move, or cry out. I could see, but not move. after the initial panic died down (this was the first of what was to be a series), I manged to systematically check every limb, and found I could move my big toe. Upon wiggling it enough, the spell broke and I regained all faculties quickly. It was frightening, and I had many more after that...and still do occasionally, though the frequency and intensity have lessened to the point where it's not anything more than 'annoying'. Also, I get a warning signal, much like an epileptic gets, right before a seizure, that feel like a mild electric shock pulsing thru my body just before the paralysis begins. Just roll with it, and dont fight or resist it, and it will pass on its own.
Good luck with it, and happy new year.

Dreams are nothing more than the conscious part of your brain relaying information the the sub-conscious part of your brain to be processed with the information stored there creating new thoughts, and then this is sent back to the sleeping but conscious part of the brain for reprocessing during the REM part of sleep, this is repeat every sleep cycle.
It's how we understand our world and learn.
When this process is disturbed by restless sleep or confused thoughts Nightmares may occur.

ALL THAT said however the attack by spirits can occur at this time of year.
Only the other day for example I was attack by the ghosts of Jonny Walker and Jim Beam!

ADDED the last bit was a Joke, However there does seem some to be a lot of sleep Myth still going around these days.
The natural occurrence of sleep paralyse where the brain creates hormones which stop the muscles moving in order to prevent the sleeper from harming them selves, is often confused and interpreted as an attack by Demons, Succubi, Old Hags, Witches and Even Little Gray Men, When the sleeper's mind awakes while the body is still in this state.

Sometimes the chemicals just don't work right, and nightmares occur. I'm not sure about demonic attacks, although I believe they happen but not as frequently as some believe.

Someone or something can attack via a nightmare. That is more likely if it is a pattern though.
