I mean... I am a project manager, a husband, a gamer, a glutton, an atheist etc... but none of these say who I am... so what IS the essence of me? Or of you for that matter...

I know exactly what you mean.. right now .... I'm "Pissed off"... but my vocation doesn't describe my ethos or my spirit.

The interesting thing about this forum is that people connect for some reason or another. Is that the essence of me ~ The part that people connect to.. the part that is absent of anything but Q&A and an avatar of an arm and an extended finger in the bird salute?

To the question 'who' we normally say our name.
As for the essence of us - it's more applied to the question 'what' we are, and that involves what we do.
So, no, I don't think it is possible to answer this without reverting to the roles. If you were not atheist, I would try to answer along the lines: 'I am what I am', and that would involve explanation of spiritual nature.

No. Even your own body with all of it's physical features distinguishes you from other people. So too do the roles you have in life. And the you that no one sees, which is what you are referring to here, is unique in it's own way by the thoughts you think and the words you say. The Bible calls it your soul. Freud called it psyche.
