Unless you enjoy posting questions on yahoo answers, get windows XP Prof! If you get VISTA you will spend most of your day asking questions on how to get the simplest things to work properly. I got a new lap top and it came with vista (XP was not an option) and I absolutely hate it. It sucks because I got a nice laptop and now it is ruined because of vista. So save yourself the time, stress, trouble, agony, sleepless nights.... and get Windows XP. You can buy upgrades to XP instead of the stand alone XP which will automatically up your ME to XP. Its a lot easier but some people have some trouble with the upgrade. Some bugs can stand out during the upgrade. To ensure less trouble, Microsoft will always have some bug, I would try and save everything you want and need (game save, documents, pictures and so forth) and start new. This will take some time backing up all your important info but if anything does go wrong, you have the things you need on backup. So, basically I would backup everything anyways no mater what you do just in case. Hope this helps.

A lot depends on your system. If you have atleast 1GB of RAM and above 3 MHz processor, Windows Vista is the best OS you can get because it has built in Defender (no need for anti virus or anti spyware), and simple and easy to use interface.
However, if you have a RAM smaller than 1GB (usually 2GB is recommended), you should install XP because Vista won't run smoothly - and may not even run at all.
When I upgraded, I made a backup of all my data and re-formatted the C:/ drive. That ensures that all rubbish and crap like virus traces etc. gets washed off. While upgrading is the best time to clean your computer. This does take longer but I would recommend it.

Mostly it depends on why you are upgrading. Personally I like Linux. I doubt you will be able to upgrade a machine that came with Windows Me beyond Windows XP Pro if you are going to continue with Microsoft.

The operating system that will be best for you PC will depend on the specifications of your PC.
The specs that xp will run on are pretty low, PII 233 MHz(300MHz recommended).126 MB ram but that is only running windows and no other programs, and this is also extremely slow. I would not recommend installing xp on anything below P4 with 512MB ram.
Good luck.

Yea you can tell it to install XP (don't get Vista) alongside the existing ME, and it will boot to XP. When you do the install don't chose the "uprade installation", do a "clean install". But don't format your drive! unless you are backed up.
Also, you should take this opportunity to switch to a Mac or get Ubuntu, because Windows is getting worse and worse. Switch now.

Go with XP. If you want a free OS, go with Linux - Ubuntu.
