I posted a question about proper foot mechinacs while performing a spinning back fist punch...i got two answers stating not to do it and the proper technique was not to do it...now obviously the people that said that are just ufc fans and most likley never train and are only speculating from past fights they have seen on tv...i personally have never used one in a fight because of instinct to keep my eyes on the other man...but many MMA that ive seen use this punch have used it when the other man is either more gased than they are or trying to end a fight that wont end...it doesnt seem to be any different from a attempted roundhouse to the head...both pose an equal threat of being taken down or countered in the jaw with a right hook...what do you think about these kinds of moves...and when do you think they should be used?

When they should be used is very subjective. I think there are too many variables to give a cut and dry answer. I think it is better to 'overlearn' the techiniques so you can act without having to cognitively think "OK, now I'll throw a right", etc. I personally try to keep the motions in a fight as direct as possible so I'm not turning my back on an opponent or opening up my guard for a free shot. If you're good and have a fast strike speed it can be useful... I think the most prevalent use of spinning back fists I've seen is in kickboxing matches, which should tell you how dated I am...

What's funny is Liddell just used a spinning back fist in his fight against Wanderlei Silva, and it helped him win. :p

Anyway...

It's hard to say, because practicality is more subjective than it is objective. Some techniques might work for you, and others might not. It's all dependent on how you frame your strategy. MMA fighters are cross-trained, but there's very few we know that don't have a central goal combat range they'd like to fight in for example.

Every technique is going to have its risks, but what you should do is really stick to the basics of the style you take. Then take a little journey through some techniques that seem to be working for you after you have a strong base with those basic moves. The way to test is to use in in the ring, and see how things pan out. If you've done well with your peers at your martial arts school, try doing the technique at competitions, and open competitions too, so you can see if it works well against different people.
A spinning backfist is not too uncommon, and the only reason people think it's unorthdox is because of the spinning motion. Some fighters don't believe spinning is practical. I personally wouldn't spin with every strike, but it can be a good way to start/end a combo for example. I don't normally use the spinning back fist either, but I do spinning kicks from time to time. It's just my way of doing things.

After you've had time using those techniques against others from your school, and other arts, it won't be about what they think if it's working for you.

I don't know if you can really say if there's a right time in a fight to use a spinning backfist for example (Though a roundhouse to the head is usually a finisher on a dazed opponent), but rather you should study your opponent, and go from there. He might be someone that even after he's tired it might not be a good idea to try it for whatever reason (Too tall for you to hit the head with it, has a head of steel, can counter you quicker than you can spin, et cetera...).

Well I will not tell you not to use it....But I will tell you to use it if you can set it up. I have used it a couple of times and both times sent me to 1st round victories. But then people started watching my tapes and then the camre to expect them....so now I mix it up alot....fight right handed and mid fight switch to South paw....use alot of flying kness ...ect.

Use what works for you....not everything works the way we want or train for..... but situations vary and techniques have to be used in the different situations.....you will know when to and not to use flying back fist or whatever.

Good luck

mostly i use those to get out of someone up close and punching me, and it's pretty effective. it's not the most effective technique, though, and generally is best when used in point sparring. still, it has its place; but you wouldn't want to do it just as a normal technique. only to get out of an up close pounding.
