The percentage of alcohol remains constant. . . 40% alcohol means:
If you have a gallon of booze then 4/10ths of the gallon is alcohol.
If you pour a one ounce drink, then 4/10ths of that ounce is alcohol.
If you add an ounce of a non-alcoholic beverage to the one ounce of booze, then you would have a drink that was still 4/10ths ounces alcohol, but the percentage would be diluted to 20%.
by the way, a beverage that is 40% alcohol is considered 80 proof.

It's 40% per volume. I'm assuming per shot. And just a fact you might be interested to know is that anytime you see 80 proof or 100 proof, all you do is divide that in half to get the percentage of alcohol by volume. So 40% would be an 80 proof liquor.

It means that if you pour one ounce of vodka in a shot glass, 40% by volume is pure alcohol, the other 60% is made up of water and other impurities.
The same goes for any measure you care to use, from a single drop, to a 40,000 gallon vat.
Just FYI, most often, when people talk of the alcoholic content of distilled liquors, they speak of proof. Proof equals the percentage of alcohol times two. For example, your 40% vodka is referred to as 80 proof. Wild Turkey 101 Proof Bourbon has 50.5% alcohol content. And Pure Grain Alcohol is 190 Proof, or 95% pure alcohol.

Ok when it says 40% that means the whole bottle. When it says 40% alcohol or something that means for the whole bottle.

40 percent is basically saying how strong it is. Like... 40 percent would be weaker than 80 or 100. Thats all it means.
