it all depends on what her date/husband wears...if he wears black tie she should wear something on the lines of a cocktail dress remember don't look like the bride or one of the bridesmaids....if your escort wears a plain suit then wear just a dress...some say you shouldn't wear black to a wedding, but i think that rule is outdated you can never go wrong with the little black dress... add a colorful shawl for a little extra....just remember you never want to outdo the bride it's her day...happy new year

It's the man who wears the tie! If the woman's husband or escort is wearing black tie, she should wear a cocktail dress. If he's wearing a suit, she should wear a slightly less dressy dress--though maybe still a cocktail dress.

How I would take it is the woman needs to be more dressed up than for work/interview, but not so dressed up she looks like a bridesmaid or mother of the bride....
Maybe a coctail dress
Here are a few links for what I think might work....not sure of your size or price range...

It is semi-formal for a woman to wear a tie. That look is more for partying.

Black dressy dress, or many colors but not white or close to white, that goes past knees or close to the knees. Little or no cleavage, closed toe shoes, panty hose for sure. Do an updo for your hair and that will dress it up to. Maybe a nice necklace, even pearls.
