all contracts are for EIGHT years. for the Navy, a MINIMUM of 4 years will be active duty, unless NCS is still going on( that is being phased out).. for NCS..15 months AD after all training is complete followed by a mandatory 24 months in the Reserves.
What rating you get will depend on your Line scores on the ASVAB as well as other factors like ability to get a Clearance and normal color perception.

While I have no idea what a GAP year is eithter, I will say that I have met quite a few people from the PTS or CTS, whichever you want to call it. I am an OIC in the Navy reserves, and I have had to administratively separate 3 people who have joned through these programs because they just stop showing up. These people have wound up owing the government money because they did not fulfill their 8 year obligation, and thus were not entitled to any of the bonus money they received. Be very sure about what you want to do, and make sure you know every detail about it before you sign on the dotted line.

There is Perform to Serve, I think that is what it is called that lets you do two years and then you can decide to stay in or get out.
I couldn't remember the name. But I do know many Navy reservists that have not been called to active duty. Army reserves are getting called up alot, but the Navy as much. Just expect at least a 4 year committment if you do anything with the military.

Close, but not exactly... The program is known as National Call to Service (NCS), not Perform to Serve.
If you join under the NCS program, you will be on Active Duty for 18 months, and then you will go into the Reserves after that. The catch is the day you switch over to Reserves, you are more than likely going to be reporting back to Active Duty. It definitely isnt a guarantee, but its a definite possibility.

We don't do enlistments for 1 year. For allot of jobs, your first year is schooling, before you even set foot on a boat.
ADDED: PTS does not "let you out" after two years. It is what is used to see if the Navy will retain you and keep you in the same rate, or cross rate, for your first re-enlistment.
ADDED: Hoffman: You are getting the two confused, the Navy has PTS for active first termers. I know the program you are talking about, they are not the same.
