What is the difference between Combat accuracy and Target Accuracy, when it comes to shooting?

Alexander is pretty well correct, but to put it in simple figures, Combat Accuracy generally is held to mean that a firearm can put five shots into a group 3" or less in diameter at 25 yards for handguns and 50 or 100 yards for long guns.

Most target shooters won't keep a handgun that won't do shoot a 1" or less five shot group at 25 yards with at least one load. The same at 100 yards for a long gun.

As Colonel Townsend Wheeler used to say, "Only accurate guns are interesting."

There is no such thing as combat accuracy or target accuracy. There is accuracy- the ability to hit the target chosen or presented in the time allotted. Combat accuracy as taught by some current instructors is simply an excuse to avoid teaching marksmanship fundamentals and insure that no student feels they are ill equipped to survive a deadly threat encounter.

Combat accuracy is nothing more than a term created by manufacturers as an excuse to make guns with crappy accuracy. It is cheaper to make a loose gun that doesnt shoot very good groups. So they came up with this "Combat Accuracy" bull. Basically figuring if most shots will stay inside 10" or so at a really short range it has "combat accuracy".. The term is also used by people that cant shoot but like to brag that they can. It isnt real hard to make guns that are reliable and will hold 2" groups at 25 yards. Really talented pistol smiths can do alot better,

Generally combat accuracy with pistol is 3 inches at 7 yards and 6 inches at 25, depending on the training regimine. target accuracy shoud be sub moa at 7 and no more than 3½ at 25.

Combat accuracy means being able to hit the "vitals" or kill areas of human sized targets while under stress, and movement. Target accuracy means being able to hit the center of, or as close to the 10 ring as possible, usually under more relaxed conditions, and mostly from a rest or supported shooting position. That's it in it's simplist form. Of course there are variations to both.

Contrary to what Vince says, the NHL does keep track of shooting accuracy. As jackavsfan mentioned. The NHL defines shooting percentage as the percentage of shots on goal that are counted as goals (excluding shootout attempts) Shooting accuracy is defined by the NHL as the number of shots on goal out of shots attempted (SOG + Missed Shots). The NHL has kept track of shooting percentage since the 1967-68 season and has kept track of shooting accuracy since the 1997-98 season

Combat accuracy is the ability to hit your target therefore putting down a threat like an armed attacker, mugger, etc. If soemeone says a gun has good combat accuracy it means that they can hit their target and sucessfully stop a threat.
Ex. The Browning hi-power has good combat accuracy.

Target accuracy is the ability to hit your target. No one really needs target accuracy unless you're into competetive shooting in which case it's good to have.
Ex. The STI target has good target accuracy.


If you say gun 1 has good target accuracy and gun 2 has good combat accuracy than gun 1 most likely has the better accuracy.
