yesterday I called into my parents place to tell them about something, they had another couple there and I said my hellos to them. Then mum spoke to me so I turned to listen to what she said but at the same time one of their friends asked a question. I was immediately bawled out by my father for being so rude and not answering his friend right away - I had no idea the guy was even talking to me. I turned around and said I didn't hear the question as I was being spoken to by Mum - it didn't stop him from carrying on and saying I should have been listening to both - mind you mum at times is very hard to understand she'll start talking about one thing then go off about another and back to the first thing - so you really need to pay attention to her.

It sounds to me like your Dad and you might have had other issues in the past, and he was trying to look like he was "in control" in front of his friend. I think you should say something to Your Dad about his behavior. He was rude especially if you were talking to your Mum at the same time his friend spoke. Why didn't your Mum speak up for you? Yes, I think your father was in the wrong. But who were this other couple? Was one of them perchance his boss? People (men, oddly, more than women, in my experience) can get disproportionately touchy when their boss or someone else who has power over them is involved. In any case, I'm sure that the other person understood your position, especially if he or she knows your mother at all well. I advise being rather distantly polite with Dad for a bit. By now Mum may have told him a thing or two, anyway.

Well that was completely unreasonable! How is anyone supposed to listen to two people at one time? I have to agree with the other answerers that it was also incredibly rude for your dad to embarrass you by chastising you in front of the others, but in the end, he really only made himself look bad. Was he having a bad day or something?

Your father is the rude one--you are obviously an adult and can manage fine on your own without being micromanaged by your dad. Next time he goes to speak, yell at him and say that you were about to speak and that it was rude of him to even consider speaking at that moment...

Your dad certainly was rude. In addition to being so rude I'm sure he made his guests most uncomfortable. I'm willing to bet your mother couldn't wait for them to leave so she could let him know how rude HE was! He owes you a big apology.

Sounds to me like your Dad was a bit rude by chastising you that way in front of their friends..... you werent doing anything to cause him to scold you like that...maybe he needs to practice what he preaches....
