In retail jobs, the workers are always lazy. They do not look presentable meaning their hair, clothes, and makeup is a mess, and they always have the nastiest attitude. How do they get the jobs? I've been applying to retail stores for a while, I have experience, and still no luck. When I go on interview, no call back. I'm 17, very beautiful, mature, well dressed, intelligent, and meticulous. People have told me that all of my life but still the managers in these stores don't consider me. I work FAST, and I follow instructions. I am nice to people and very polite. Sometimes I think that I act too professional for the managers. They seem to like bold, and reckless people. It makes me feel sad and angry when I see the type of people who actually do get the jobs but hard working people dont. Do you know why that is?

My experience/observation has been that employees often reflect the attitude of their bosses, and ultimately the company they work for. Managers who are indifferent to their employees tend to end up with employees who are in turn indifferent to the customers. Though there are sometimes exceptions, generally good employees at poor companies tend to seek out greener pastures, and poor employees at good companies end up with low hours or terminated.

It is possible that you do act too professional - you need to consider the job you are applying for when choosing your attire/tone. For fast food, you probably want something clean and casual - not a suit. For sales, you probably want to scout the place first and resemble (but not totally mimic) the dress of the better sales staff. For retail, consider what jobs you are considering - fast is good in restocking, accuracy is good in checkout, but for the almighty sales too much politeness can be a minus. Most stores want someone who will convince the customer to buy as much as possible with all the upsales - someone who is very polite/mature might concern managers in putting the customers wants/desires/needs ahead of the store's.

Also, you might consider a temp agency - they sometimes have positions for people who have a highly professional attitude. They don't always pay well, but it's a good way to get experience and contacts.

Unfortunately some people are better at selling themselves. Often times lazy &/or rude people get hired because they're good b.s.-ers. Many former employers are reluctant to give bad references because they are afraid of lawsuits, so no one contradicts them. So the person gets the job. His/her boss soon realizes that the worker sucks, but doesn't want to deal with the whole hiring process again (btw, hiring is a huge company expense & very time consuming) so the person gets to just keep skating by until they do something so heinous that management can't look the other way.

EMPLOYERS: GIVE HONEST REFERENCES--DON'T MAKE YOUR BAD EMPLOYEE'S NEXT BOSS MISERABLE!

Keep up your confidence, be persistent (even if you think you are being somewhat of a nuisance--just don't call six times a day!), and keep honest. Integrity is the best job skill you can have.

I am just like how you described except I'm 25 years old. In every job I've had customers as well as fellow co workers tell me I'm an excellent worker and would make a damn good manager. Yet would skip over me in promotions. So I have no idea why lazy people get jobs.

i had a baby and before i had what i thought was a good job and now when i went to apply for jobs the people were impressed with me but still no body hired me. I dont know what the deal is but it pisses me off too. I see the same poeple doing the job i applied for and i'm like what i have more experience then this person how did i get over passed. I dont have a bad attitude but they are giving me one for not wanting to hire me. They hire with experience too so keep that in mind they always take the person with most experience, best of luck to you just keep on trying. try bigger and better places.

Are you coming across as too confidant in your interviews? Some people will not hire someone they see as a "threat". Also, as far as these retail places hiring the lazy workers, they aren't hiring them because they're lazy (obviously they don't know that when hiring them unless they actually did a check with former employers)... chances are, the person who is "lazy" was willing to accept piddly @$$ wages and the company doesn't hire you because they know when they tell you the $5.80 an hr wage, you'd probably just laugh at them. What kind of places are you applying to anyways? Department stores?

Sorry this has happen to you!!!!!!!
Please don't get discourged and act like the rest of the world.
As i can relate to your question as this has happened to me in other jobs.. The world is not a fair place so get used to it. I'm sorry but your going to have to pove yourself as most of us aren't handed anything. I would suggest getting some kind of training as it could be just reading a book on any job your interested in. Also i would suggest asking people here how they got there job as there might be some insight to acheiving your goal. I hope this helps in some way but don't give up.Your goal is only one more try away just keep saying that every time it's not working out. Also everything isn't about looks but attitude. I think you should work on that. Attitude is your building block.

Lazy people get jobs because we all have to work.

Lazy people take retail because it requires a lot less effort (and credentials) than labor, hospitality, medical, law enforcement, etc...

You may be the perfect worker but you have no work history. I know this sounds bass ackwards but the more history you have the easier it is to get a job. You just gotta keep looking till you find that one manager/boss that's willing to give you a break and you can get your foot in the door.

These people. Me being one of them normally have really good people skills. They often can make great impressions and win over their opponent (the employer in this case). You may not notice this because the often turn this off when working around customers as the customers won't affect their position.
